Long Service Awards

As part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations, the University is delighted to announce the launch of a Long Service Awards Scheme.  This recognises the contribution of staff who have worked for the University for a significant period of time and have reached, or will reach, the key milestone of 15, 25 and 40 years of continuous service at the University in our 50th year.

For staff who have reached 25 and 40 years' service, a special celebratory event will take place at the Apex City Quay Hotel on Wednesday 15 November, hosted by the Principal.  Invitations have recently been sent out for this event. If you have reached one of these key milestones and not received your invitation, please contact your School/Professional Services HR Officer.

For those staff who have achieved 15 years of service, a drinks reception will be hosted locally within Schools and Professional Services. Invitations confirming these arrangements will be sent out over the coming weeks with the respective receptions taking place before Christmas.

Changes to data protection laws

As you will no doubt have heard, UK data protection law changes on 25 May 2018. This change will impact upon the University and we should (and are) preparing for it.

We will provide updates on our progress in this newsletter, highlighting tools and templates as we develop them.

However, it’s important to remember that we’ve had data protection rules for many years. The new law builds on existing good practice in areas such as:

  • making sure that your computers and mobile devices are encrypted and password-protected
  • not emailing personal data in unencrypted attachments or the body of emails
  • using Box to share information securely
  • working with data in core systems as far as possible
  • checking that the information you give to people when collecting their data is accurate and appropriate and that you are holding the information securely
  • ensuring that research design takes account of personal data issues and the right safeguards in place to protect data
  • locking information in desk drawers or offices when unattended and not printing information when you don’t need to
  • shredding paper when no longer required, or arranging the uplift of confidential waste with Estates & Campus Services
  • working with key contacts in Professional Services (eg Legal, Procurement, EDPU, UoDIT and/or RIS) to make sure that relevant legal and contractual controls are in place when dealing with suppliers or partners
  • reporting data incidents quickly so we can mitigate their impact.

If you have any questions about the changes in the law or are unsure about any of the above, please contact Alan Bell, Head of Information Governance dataprotection@dundee.ac.uk.

Honorary degree nominations

Every year during Summer and Winter Graduation the University awards a small number of Honorary Degrees to individuals who have made an outstanding achievement or contribution in their field, and who have a link in some way to the University or to the wider city.  These recipients inspire our graduates to go out and follow their dreams and be the best that they can be and we're now inviting nominations to be awarded in 2018.

If there's anyone you would like to receive an Honorary Degree then let us know by filling in the online form by 18 October 2017.

Academic Skills Centre (ASC): developing students' academic skills and enhancing skills for academics

The Centre for the enhancement of Academic Skills, Teaching, Learning and Employability (CASTLE) has re-branded as the new Academic Skills Centre (ASC). This change of name is in response to student and staff feedback that ASC is more identifiable with what they do.

Their services prioritise the two key areas of developing students' academic skills and enhancing skills for academics. They will continue to deliver these services and to build on the successes of CASTLE, working collaboratively with student and staff partners, to support excellence in learning and teaching across the University.
