Featured Artist: Daniel Martin Diaz (b. 1967)The imagery in Daniel Martin Diaz’s work is influenced greatly by his childhood memories of growing up in a Mexican-American household in Arizona. He is also inspired by the “terrible beauty” of the Southwestern landscape as well as the prevalence of Spanish and Mexican influences on the culture in that region, such as the brutal depictions of the suffering of Christ. Gothic ornamentation and arcane religious sigils and medallions feature in Diaz’s work along with symbolism culled from Freemasonry and secret societies. He has recently completed a series of works inspired by John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost which will be featured in the next Raw Vision. This Darkness Light, detail After capturing an idea in a drawing, Diaz transfers it into a painting and applies layers upon layers of thin glazes over time, culminating in an image with a stained-glass luminosity. Diaz never went to art school; his success as a self-taught artist is the result of his determination and following the conviction of his personal vision. Mors et Musica He endeavours to capture the sorrow, pain and mysteries of life. Recently, Diaz has been inspired by scientific and philosophical concepts such as anatomy, computer science, math, cosmology and quantum physics. Daniel Martin Diaz is featured in our Outsider Art Sourcebook, currently half price! Diaz will also be featured in Raw Vision 95, out in September! |
