Click here 4 September 2020 CaRST eNewsletterDirector's Message I’ve been impressed by the enthusiasm of our HDR students to participate in this year’s virtual Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition, with a total of 81 video submissions received from a variety of disciplines across the University. Two finalists from each faculty have now been selected and will advance to the University-level competition. Watch the 2020 3MT finalists videos and join us for the virtual event on 8th September to see who will receive a national spot in the Asia-Pacific competition. This month we are introducing a new workshop called The PhD Experience, which is an interactive class drawing on a series of activities that have been developed to represent stages of the PhD journey. Presenting your Research with Confidence Date: 11 September 2020 If you’re a researcher then at some stage you are going to have to present your findings. It’s tempting to get up and just read your paper, but to really speak to your audience you need to be able to communicate skilfully and with conviction. We’ve all been to dull presentations so it’s worth your while spending a little time to learn how to do it properly. This workshop will provide a clear step-by-step structure that you can use again and again to give high quality presentations. Register here. Bookings close 30 minutes prior to the session. Managing your Supervisory Relationship and Digital Presence (Lectures) This is a two-part module consisting of 2 x 1.5 hour lectures. Attendance at both sessions is required. Date: 17 September 2020 & 22 October 2020 Part of the International Career and Research Skills Training (iCaRST) program, this module is focused on managing your supervisory relationship as well as your digital presence, which will help to maximise your HDR experience and research impact. This module is open to domestic HDR students who have not completed their CCSP and/or undertaken the IBPR or iCaRST. International students should not register via this link, you will be automatically enrolled by the program administrator. Register here. The PhD Experience Date & Time: This program draws on an activity and team-based problem-solving approach. A series of activities (eg team building, problem-solving, case studies) have been developed to represent stages of the PhD journey. This program appeals to a group of people who learn best from doing as opposed to listening. It is a chance to get involved in and learn from focussed activities and learn some of the skills of working in a team. Submit an expression of interest. Other Events Hacky Hour for researchers: research data management and storage Hacky hour is an informal meetup for researchers to bring their questions and discuss technology-related issues with experts. A collaboration across DRI, ITDS and the University Library, the next session will discuss storage and research data management | September 8 @ 3 pm. Register. LabArchives Electronic Research Notebook This session will help researchers and HDR students who want to learn how to collaborate, update, and manage research data using the LabArchive Electronic Research Notebook system. Survey Tools in Research: REDCap and Qualtrics Now more than ever researchers are needing to embrace electronic data capture methods to keep their research moving in the midst of social distancing restrictions and decreased access to survey participants. News New online resource to help with choosing your research methodology and methods The most challenging activity in many research projects revolves around deciding which methodologies and methods to utilize. This set of resources from Charles Darwin University will help you decide which theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and methods you should use; decide which techniques you could use to analyze data, and identify other methods that could improve your research. Focus on peer review online course This free online learning course from Nature Masterclasses provides a comprehensive and insightful overview of the peer review process. For students and researchers in the natural sciences who are new to peer review or wish to refresh their skills. Free to access upon registration. Use the certificate of completion to claim 3.5 CaRST hours in Domain D. Industry Opportunities The Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) Program and Scholarship IEP scholarships are now available to support eligible domestic and international students who undertake an industry placement as part of their PhD. The University of Adelaide’s Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) program involves participation in an industry placement of 1-3 months (FTE) in duration, together with the completion of a number of Career and Research Skills Training (CaRST) and other professional development activities. Completion of the IEP, including the CaRST credit courses, will be reflected as a statement on the academic transcript.
