Queen's Wharf Pedestrian Bridge Honours Indigenous Pioneer

The new proposed pedestrian bridge to be built as part of the Queen’s Wharf Brisbane project, connecting the city to South Bank, will honour the life and legacy of Australia’s first Indigenous parliamentarian, Neville Bonner.

State Development Minister Dr Anthony Lynham announced the naming of The Neville Bonner Bridge at a ceremony at the Neville Bonner Building in William Street on August 12.

“Naming the new bridge after Senator Bonner acknowledges a great life of service to Queensland and Australia, and symbolically links cultures,” Dr Lynham said.

The new bridge will be part of the $3 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane development and link both sides of the river.

The session was extremely well attended with the most number of member questions recorded, highlighting the level of interest and importance this project has on the precinct.

The Brisbane Metro Subway System is likely to be the largest infrastructure project to impact the precinct in coming years.

Conrad Gargett wins Queensland Business History Award for 2016

The Queensland Business History Award recognises leadership in collecting, preserving and sharing business history.

This year’s recipient, BSB member Conrad Gargett, has been a leading architectural practice in Brisbane for over 125 years. Founded in Brisbane in 1890, the award-winning company started out life as HW Atkinson, chalking up its first award for the design of the Brisbane Head Fire Station.

As one of Queensland’s longest-running architectural firms, and having been involved in some of Queensland’s most well-known buildings, Conrad Gargett’s archive is a tremendous record of the state’s built heritage.

Conrad Gargett’s collection includes carefully preserved architectural drawings from their inception in 1890, architectural models, ledgers, historic photos and other ephemera. A number of these drawings and models are displayed in Conrad Gargett’s head office and the firm has donated a number of items for display in exhibitions held at State Library of Queensland and Museum of Brisbane.

South Bank's Pokémon Heaven

When the Pokémon Go phenomenon hit Brisbane’s streets, South Bank Corporation knew the precinct would be popular on weekends but didn’t anticipate just how popular it would become midweek, with retailers reporting significant increases in weekday lunch and after-work visitation during the traditionally slower months.

Weekday visitation numbers have risen sharply around Pokéstops scattered throughout South Bank, with the prominent sculpture nicknamed ‘Bruce’ (hanging above the junction of Stanley Street Plaza and Ernest Street) drawing hordes of Pokémon hunters in their search for Pokémon gold. In addition to Bruce, South Bank has roughly 20 Pokéstops aligned with prominent locations throughout the Parklands, Little Stanley Street and Grey Street.

South Bank Corporation’s CEO Jeff Weigh said that research carried out last week revealed a surge in weekday visitation that could be directly attributed to the precinct’s reputation as Pokéstop heaven.

“From our research people we spoke to were aged between 16 and 35 years of age and were playing as much as five times a week either on their lunch breaks or after work.

Bruce is a Pokémon magnet and he’s proven to be a great lure for local workers, convention centre delegates and Griffith University students who congregate at lunchtime and after work which in turn, is driving positive economic spin-offs for the food and retail outlets throughout South Bank.”
