Tributes to Professor Roger Fletcher

Tributes have been paid to the University’s Professor Roger Fletcher FRS, who passed away earlier this month while on holiday in the Highlands.

An acclaimed mathematician who arrived at Dundee in 1973, Roger was formerly the Baxter Professor of Mathematics and was awarded the prestigious Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2008. He was regularly invited to speak at international meetings, and was an Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh and a Visiting Professor at the University of Ferrara in Italy.

Roger’s loss is felt by family, friends and all those who worked with and were taught by him. Professor Fordyce Davidson said: “He was a kind and humble man who despite the many honours and accolades he received from across the world, remained the same gentle, unassuming colleague, always supportive and ready to take on new challenges. We are deeply saddened to no longer have Roger with us but the mathematics he developed will continue to be used by major companies across the world and his work will guide and influence generations of mathematicians to come.”

Honorary Graduates' Award for Inclusive Practice 2016

Dr Linda Martindale and Dr Linda McSwiggan (both School of Nursing & Health Sciences) were awarded the Honorary Graduates' Award for Inclusive Practice thanks to their 'novel' idea to help first year nursing students understand healthcare environments and conditions.

In response to student demand for prepatory reading, Linda and Linda created a reading list of novels in which the stories centre around health issues, including The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Me Before You. The project, entitled ASK4Books, will be integrated into the undergraduate module Academic Skills and Knowledge (ASK), and will help students to prepare for their initial placements during Semester 1 by exploring topics like euthanasia, dementia, loss, and learning disability through discussion.

ASK4Books was piloted in May this year and there are plans for a full roll-out in September. It's potentially relevant for any professional programme so if you'd like to get your students involved, get in touch with CASTLE.

More info about this change will be added to IT Status soon...

- UoD IT understand you need a clearer way to get the things you're eligible to have for study, like software downloads. That's why they're launching an area in My Dundee to hold it all that you'll soon have access too. Want to help them name your IT Toolkit? Suggest a name.

There are 207 nations competing in the Rio Olympics which starts next week. We're looking to claim a University of Dundee link to each and every one of those countries - some are easy, many are more tricky!

If you can claim a link via your nationality, a research link, a student trip or exchange scheme, where an alumni is working, or anything else, please contact internal-comms@dundee.ac.uk ASAP. Don't assume we've got all the obvious countries covered!
