Dear member
Australians are rightly proud of the contributions of our home grown inventors. From the wine cask to the Hills Hoist, Aussie ingenuity is well known.
Did you know that next month sees us celebrate the 40th anniversary of the emergence of the Pink Lady apple?
This famous apple was first developed in regional WA and first commercially grown in the Southern Forests of Manjimup.
Whilst the Pink Lady™ trademark was not finalised until the 1980s, May 2014 will mark the 40th anniversary of the first Cripps Pink tree’s emergence, named for its creator John Cripps.
In fact the original Cripps Pink tree is still growing at Manjimup Horticultural Research Institute of the Department of Agriculture and Food WA.
The famous Pink Lady is a hybrid of the Lady Williams and Golden Delicious apples. This popular apple variety is now grown across the globe, making the Pink Lady another successful Aussie invention, from our very own regional backyard.
So to everyone in regional WA, celebrate autumn with a crisp Pink Lady apple – and, as with all “fresh” purchases, make sure it is WA grown.
