Simon says...

Kia ora koutou

We’re six weeks away from the EER visit and preparations are ramping up. I'm happy with progress and we are on track – “we’ve got this”. My main message to all Unitec whānau remains:

EER is an all-Unitec effort, and our ongoing commitment to student success and academic quality is the #1 contributor to a strong EER result. This is about the quality of our business-as-usual work and our continuous improvement.

We will be judged in our EER on our educational performance and the quality of our self-assessment. The whole institution contributes to these being successful.

The timetable for the EER visit will be available shortly, but the NZQA have confirmed that the EER will now be completely online, due to NZQA being precautionary with COVID-19.

A big highlight has been the completion and submission of our self-assessment document to the EER panel, which you can review this here - EER Self-Assessment Summary 2020. Along with this document, we also submitted Milestones 2018-2020, which sets out the key things we’ve done since the last EER.

The Self-Assessment Summary 2020 forms the basis of our evidence to the NZQA panel. It explains how well we are performing against the Key Evaluative Questions and Tertiary Education Indicators. It also describes what we’ve done since the last EER, including how we’ve responded to NZQA’s recommendations. Reading these, we have a lot to be proud of!

Thank you to all the teams who contributed to getting this Self-Assessment over the line. One of the main contributors to this document and to keeping the EER 'engine room' running is Cathy Tyler.

Cathy (pictured right) has been at Unitec for almost five years as part of the Executive Support Team. She was seconded to the EER ‘action team’ alongside Simon Nash and Trude Cameron in June.

Cathy was involved with both the 2016 and 2018 EERs so has a good understanding of how the process works and the organisation involved, and says, “I believe my experience in administration and event management, along with a good understanding and overview of how Unitec works and the EER process, will assist in a successful EER result. Teams at Unitec are doing an outstanding job of teaching and supporting our students so we just need to prove this to the EER panel”.

Over the next three weeks, all the remaining documenta-tion for the EER will be completed and made available to the panel. This includes PEPs, reviews from Heads of School and Priority Group Directors, and ‘Overview’ documents for each of the focus areas.

We will also be running a series of EER panel preparation sessions with the focus area teams, and with ELT, Academic Board, the Unitec Board, and our Rūnanga and Fono Faufautua. We will be preparing each team by asking them the same sorts of questions as the panel will be asking.

Regardless of which part of Unitec you are in, your ongoing commitment to student success and academic quality are critical to our EER result. Thank you to everyone for your efforts.
