WALGA Managing Alcohol in Our Communities Guide

The Managing Alcohol in our Communities (MAIOC) Guide supports Local Governments to address alcohol related issues within their communities and create a safe and healthy place for people to work, live and play.

The Guide has been developed in partnership with the Mental Health Commission, the Public Health Advocacy Institute of Western Australia (PHAIWA) and WALGA.

Hospitalised injury among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 2011-12 to 2015-16

A recent report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare provides an update on statistics of hospitalisations among Indigenous people due to injury, including the type and cause of injury requiring hospitalisation.

The report shows that over the five year period between 2011–2016, a total of 115,021 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were hospitalised due to injury at an average of 23,000 cases per year.

The leading cause of hospitalisation due to injury among Indigenous people overall was falls followed by assault.

WA Respectful Relationships Teaching Support Program

The Department of Communities is working with the Department of Education, White Ribbon Australia and Starick Services to deliver the WA Respectful Relationships Teaching Support Program.

The program supports school staff to teach students about healthy and positive relationships in the context of family and domestic violence prevention, and the implementation of a whole of school approach to violence prevention.

The WA Respectful Relationships Teaching Support Program is informed by a growing body of research, policy and practice in primary prevention in school settings and has been adapted to the WA context.

Presentation by Dr Joe Clare, Assistant Professor and Senior Lecturer of Criminology UWA. Joe has worked in Australia and Canada and is committed to helping applied practitioners utilize theory, research, and analysis to enhance the understanding of problems they are encountering with a view to developing, implementing, and evaluating novel, creative intervention strategies. His research focuses on using available data to contribute to solving applied problems.

Grassroots Falls Festival 2019

19 + 20 September 2019

The festival provides an opportunity for health professionals and other staff across all settings, managers, educators, policy makers, and others with an interest in reducing the risk of falling among older people to enjoy sharing the latest ideas and innovative approaches in practice, research and falls prevention at the GrassRoots level. 

The festival focus is to support the broad falls prevention community to access current research, practice innovations, cutting edge work in falls prevention and management and other exciting GrassRoots falls prevention initiatives that are happening in Australia and overseas. The program will feature presentations from across the residential aged care, hospital and community settings.

The Grass Roots Falls Festival will be held on 19 & 20 September 2019 in Fremantle.

Consultation for the 10 Year Strategy for Reducing Family and Domestic Violence

2018 Alcohol Policy Scorecard

The National Alliance for Action on Alcohol (NAAA), has now released the 2018 Alcohol Policy Scoreboard. The scorecard benchmarks Australian state and territory governments’ progress towards preventing and reducing alcohol-related harm. Western Australia and Queensland came equal second, with the Northern Territory the 2018 winner.

Baseball Australia says no to alcohol ads

Baseball Australia put the health and welfare of its players and supporters first, pledging to no longer accept alcohol advertising in its junior competitions and at the national representative level of the game. In doing so, it became the first Australian sporting code to partner with the End Alcohol Advertising in Sport campaign, sending a strong message.

The Northern Territory has been busy in its ongoing efforts to reduce the unacceptable level of alcohol harm. The new NT Liquor Commission held its first hearing on Woolworths’ brazen attempt to open a Dan Murphy’s on a technicality during a liquor license moratorium.

WA Rural and Remote Mental Health Conference 2019, Moorditjabiny: Becoming Stronger

The WA Rural and Remote Mental Health Conference 2019 will be held in Albany from 15-18 October 2019. The conference is a key event for anyone who cares about access to mental health services and the particular issues facing regional and remote communities and is an opportunity for mental health professionals from across WA to participate in information sharing, training, upskilling and networking.

Consultation now open: Managing public health risks at events in Western Australia

As part of the implementation of the Public Health Act 2016 in WA, the Department of Health has reviewed the management of events under the Health (Public Buildings) Regulations 1992.
