On behalf of the AGC, I wish you all a safe and successful New Year 2021. The University achieved a record number of 418 thesis completions in 2020 – let’s break this record again this year! In case you used the HDR write-up space and/or the computer suite that were made available over the Christmas break, I would be curious to hear how well it worked, how utilised it was or if you have experienced any issues. Please share your feedback with us via email to graduate.centre@adelaide.edu.au, so we can learn and adapt to future needs. The AGC will have to say goodbye to some of our amazing colleagues in the next few weeks, but we are also excited to gain a few new team members. We would greatly appreciate your patience and understanding during this time of transition. Nevertheless, our front desk will be open Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm, and we will also continue with our informal virtual HDR catch-ups every second Friday, 12pm – 12:30pm due to the great feedback. Watch out for the zoom link which we will send to your email shortly before. The next meeting is scheduled for this Friday 29th January. If you are an international student currently onshore in Adelaide and have only received one International Student Support Grant in 2020, please check your eligibility here and apply before 5pm, Friday 29 January to receive additional support. Lastly, our thoughts at this time are with the students and their families who once again have been affected by devastating bushfires in the Adelaide Hills. Please remember that Student Life offer assistance and counselling if you are in need of support. Take care and stay safe, Doreen Krumbiegel Tip of the Month Ensure your contact details and emergency contacts are current! What a year 2020 was! As we move forward in 2021, it is timely to review and update your contact details on Access Adelaide. It is very important that we have a record of your current mailing address and permanent home address, together with two emergency contacts we can approach in the event of an emergency. Please note that:
2021 Research Student Handbook It is expected that the 2021 Research Student Handbook will be available on the AGC website at the end of January. The Handbook has been optimised for online viewing allowing readers to find the information they need more easily through a clickable contents page or through a keyword search with the find function. Printed copies of the Handbook will no longer be produced, resulting in a very significant reduction in paper use. A limited number of printed 2020 Research Student Handbook copies are available for collection from the Graduate Centre reception. Whilst the online Handbook may be printed for personal use, we strongly encourage you to consult the Handbook online. Think green, read on the screen. ‘Study Leave’ now known as ‘Study Away’ The AGC has received feedback that the term ‘Study Leave’ is confusing because the word ‘leave’ implies candidature would stop like it does for leave of absence. After reviewing practice at other universities, we have found that the common term used is ‘Study Away’, and therefore we will have decided to transition to this. During ‘Study Away’ students continue to consume candidature as they are actively completing activities related to their research. All HDR students are eligible for up to 12 months of ‘Study Away’ during their candidature for undertaking study, collecting data, attending a conference or performing other tasks related to their research, away from Adelaide. The ‘Study Away’ form can be found on the AGC forms webpage. All students and supervisors should refer to the recent email from the Graduate Centre dated 13 January 2021 regarding travelling for University business and the associated restrictions due to COVID before considering ‘Study Away’. Postgraduate Scholarship OpportunitiesThe Adelaide Graduate Centre maintains a searchable database of available scholarship opportunities (both full scholarships and supplementary scholarships), funded by both the University of Adelaide and external funding bodies. While the majority of available scholarships are awarded as part of the standard admission and scholarship rounds for domestic and international students, some are awarded at different times throughout the year, and may have a separate application process. Visit the Postgraduate Scholarships website regularly for up to date information on current scholarship opportunities. Fulbright Scholarship applications now open Apply now to research at the world’s most prestigious institutions in 2022/23 with Fulbright. Fulbright Australia offers scholarships across all career stages, and all academic fields. Awardees take part in an academic and cultural exchange, pursuing research at a U.S. institution, experiencing life abroad and bringing back their knowledge and experience to share with their communities in Australia. Scholarships are available for postgraduate students undertaking their Australian PhD to conduct research in the U.S. for 4-10 months OR postdoctoral candidates (who have completed their PhD in the past 5 years, or are in the last year of completion) to undertake postdoctoral research in the U.S. for 3-10 months. Applications close 6 July 2021. Register for the webinar or email to find out more. Further information also available online. International Women’s Day 2021: Let’s celebrate University womenInternational Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on the 8th of March, allowing us to recognise the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women the world over. For IWD 2021, we will celebrate University of Adelaide women - staff, students and alumni - who have inspired or supported others through innovation, service, leadership and/or resilience during the past year. Members of the University community are invited to submit nominations. All eligible nominees will be celebrated through a collage of photographs, and summaries of their contributions and personal attributes. These will be displayed online and printed for an IWD breakfast to be held on North Terrace, Roseworthy and Waite campuses on Friday 5th March 2021. Nominate a woman who has inspired or supported you here by 5 February 2021.
