EAT FRESH REFRESHSubway is launching a major menu refresh with 11 upgraded ingredients and 4 new sandwich builds to reinvigorate the brand. Changes will be made to the bread, protein options and other sandwich fillings. Subway will close all restaurants early the night before as staff prepare for the debut of the ‘Eat Fresh Refresh’ campaign on July 13th. In addition to menu changes, Subway is rolling out Subway Delivers, a service provided by DoorDash via the brand’s website and app. 2. PIZZA TRENDS POST-PANDEMICConsumers are eating more pizza than ever, thanks to the pandemic. The industry quickly pivoted to accommodate takeout orders and there was noticeable growth in the frozen and take-and-bake categories as consumers began to shift the ways in which they got pizza, according to Datassential’s Pizza Keynote report. Pizza trends are balancing between nutritious and indulgent offerings. Cauliflower crusts, superfoods and plant-based toppings are popular while stuffed crusts and bold global flavours are also trending. 3. MCDONALD'S DARWINIAN STRATEGYThe secret to McDonald’s success is its ability to adapt to the changing marketplace with a Darwinian strategy. The global chain embraces consumer preferences in a regional basis by providing options the customer wants to buy. McDonald’s plan is to appeal to the whims of consumers and keep refreshing its menu with limited time and seasonal offers. The one guarantee is fast, quality food menu offerings that cater to local tastes. 4. LIDL'S HEALTHIER SWAPSLidl recently performed a trial of ‘nudge tactics’ that encouraged shoppers to choose more nutritious options via on-shelf signage. The food swap flags pointed customers to a range of healthier alternative products that are easy to make and at the same price or less. Lidl is considering a longer-term initiative and has created a section on the website called ‘Healthier Swaps’. Tesco and Sainsbury’s have also experimented with nudging consumers towards more nutritious offerings. 5. NESTLE LAUNCH MEZEAST RANGENestlé are jumping on the exotic cuisine trend with the launch of their Middle Eastern-inspired food brand, Mezeast. The brand will roll out exclusively in Tesco and is designed to bring together the best tastes and flavours of the Middle East. The 11-strong range includes meal kits, sauces, spreads and pastes. Products include a Falafel Wrap Kit, Harissa Paste, Tahini sauce and Chicken Shawarma Mix. In the last few months, there have a been array of new launches and restaurants openings inspired by this region, so Dawn Farms has developed a Taste the Mediterranean range to meet this emerging trend. 6. PRET'S CHRISTMAS IN JULYPret A Manger is embracing Christmas in July by offering its beloved Christmas sandwich mid-summer. The chain listened to customer’s reactions on social media who missed out last December due to restrictions. The seasonal offering features turkey with a port and orange cranberry sauce, pork stuffing sandwiched between thick-cut bread with baby spinach, mayo and crispy onions and will be available until the first week of August. 7. BBQ DOGS ARE HERE FOR SUMMERBBQ Dogs are back for summer at Wienerschnitzel and Hamburger Stand. The three flavours are inspired by destinations along the U.S. barbecue trail. The Texas Dog features a grilled all-beef dog topped with chopped bacon, BBQ sauce, shredded cheddar cheese and grilled onions. The Carolina Dog includes gold BBQ sauce and a pickle while the Kansas City Dog is made with a Polishdog and beer mustard. 8. AMERICAN-STYLE DRIVE THRU CONCEPTStrong Ron’s Lucky Drive Thru is a new concept created by Leon co-founder, John Vincent and Mike Palmer, co-founder of the Redroaster, Pike & Pine and Lucky Beach brands. The drive-thru experience will feature indulgent American comfort foods such as hamburgers, free-range chicken nuggets, loaded fries and shakes. The industry experts are currently seeking suitable roadside locations around the Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Gloucestershire areas. 9. INNOVATIVE DETROIT-STYLE PIZZASThe rising popularity of Detroit-style pizza has allowed pizzerias to differentiate themselves in a crowded category. Pizza Hut kicked off the year with 4 limited-time Detroit-style offerings which included a Double Pepperoni boasting 80 pepperoni slices. Meanwhile, independents and emerging chains distinguish themselves with unique ingredients and combinations. Two examples are Coast to Coast Pizzeria’s Mustard Pizza with a caramelized cheddar crust, corned beef, sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard and Bill Kim Pizza’s Korean BBQ Ground Beef and Kimchi Pizza.
