Click here 10 June 2020 ![]() CaRST eNewsletterDirector's Message I kicked off the month of June by attending a virtual welcome event for new HDR students commencing in the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (ECMS). I always look forward to these opportunities to connect with students - even if by Zoom! - and provide a more personalised introduction to the CaRST program. ![]() Also this month, we have expanded our list of experiential learning activities that can be claimed for CaRST credit. These new categories are primarily focused on arrangements with industry, which are important for enhancing student employability, increasing university-industry collaboration, as well as enabling the wider impacts of research. Further details under the CaRST News section below. Finally, it’s not too late to get involved in this year's Virtual 3MT competition! Be sure to attend training on the 15th June and register by the 19th June. Dr Monica Kerr CaRST News Virtual 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®) In 2020, the 3MT® competition has moved online via video submission, so you can share your research from the comfort of your own home! New Activity Categories in CaRST Online A new update in CaRST Online enables students to receive credit for a wider range of experiential learning activities. Establishing Industry Research Projects Date: 11 June 2020 Many HDR projects include some interaction with industry, and your career may well involve forming university industry linkages. Preparing for the 3MT: Everything you need to know Date: 15 June 2020 Designed for any HDR student who is thinking about participating in the 3MT® competition, this workshop explains what the 3MT is, how it works, and provides strategies and suggestions to help you win over the judging panel. Do you want to know how to make your presentation memorable, and cope with the inevitable anxiety that comes with presenting? Attendance at both sessions is required. Dates: 16 June 2020 and 17 June 2020 Do you have a good knowledge of the basic concepts and techniques in R and want to level up? This course from Intersect and CaRST will teach data manipulation and visualisation in R using RStudio. Open to HDR students, ECRs, and research staff. Prerequisites: This course requires a good knowledge of the basic concepts and techniques in R. Working with your Supervisor (ECMS) Date: 18 June 2020 The relationship you have with your supervisor is crucial in determining your PhD experience, but even the best student/supervisor relationships can experience periods of strain through the ups and downs of research. In this workshop, you will learn how you can establish a positive working relationship with your supervisor and ultimately get the most out of your HDR experience. Register here. Getting Started with HPC This is a 2-part workshop. Attendance at both sessions is required. Dates: 22 June 2020 and 23 June 2020 High-Performance Computing (HPC) allows you to accomplish your analysis faster by using many parallel CPUs and huge amounts of memory simultaneously. Reviving your Life while doing an HDR Date: 24 June 2020 In this final session of the Mental Health and Wellbeing series, Jane Turner Goldsmith will provide the tools needed to pick yourself up or ‘revive’ when facing common concerns for HDRs, including anxiety and stress. This session will include a range of experiential exercises to relax the body, including breathing, meditation, mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation and visualisation. Register here. The University of Adelaide’s Industry Engaged PhD (IEP) program involves participation in an industry placement of 1-3 months (FTE) in duration, together with the completion of a number of Career and Research Skills Training (CaRST) and other professional development activities. Completion of the IEP, including the CaRST credit courses, will be reflected as a statement on the academic transcript.
