Access to the award-winning and evidence-based Low Carb Program through the NHS is set to increase in 2019 thanks to a new partnership with Ascensia Diabetes Care. Ascensia’s team will be visiting, and providing support to, GP surgeries across the country to implement the digital behaviour-change platform for people with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and obesity, which has over 380,000 users and pioneering and peer-reviewed outcomes The NHS will provide continuous glucose monitors to all women with type 1 diabetes during pregnancy by 2021, it was announced this week in a new 10-year plan for the health service. People with type 1 diabetes will also benefit from flash glucose monitors from April 2019 in line with clinical guidelines to end “variation”, according to The NHS Long Term Plan. Drivers with diabetes on insulin will soon be able to use the FreeStyle Libre and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, it has been reported. The DVLA’s Medical Advisory Panel approved use of the technology in July and objections were raised from other organisations, but this week it overruled the concerns. Health Education England has launched an online diabetes footcare screening assessment. The Diabetic Foot Screening Interactive Assessment has been designed to be used by health and social care professionals who care for people with diabetes and who already have a knowledge of the procedures and skills involved. The date for Diabetes Professional Care (DPC) 2019 has been revealed, with the organisers moving the event to a bigger venue to cater for demand. The free-to-attend, CPD-accredited education conference will be held on October 29 and 30, staying at Olympia London but moving to its National Hall – allowing for larger theatre capacities and space for additional new streams. Ascensia Diabetes Care has entered into a global alliance with a developer and manufacturer of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, it has been announced this week. The company has entered into an agreement that appoints them as the exclusive distributor for Zhejiang POCTech, Co., Ltd (POCTech) in an initial 13 specifically selected markets where POCTech does not yet have a distributor, with the right of first refusal for distribution rights in other available countries.
