Bonjour CPF BC & Yukon Chapter Reps! 2014 was a busy year but even with the delayed start of the school, our Chapter Reps were able to get lots accomplished! Our membership numbers are steadily increasing and it looks like we will close this year with almost 7,200 members! Chapters also did an amazing job applying for sociocultural grants and most chapters got a number of applications in, in spite of the complicated start to the school year. The Branch has a bunch of things planned for next year, so don't forget to read your whole CRU and pass it on to your FSL communities, so that you don't miss out!

The Branch office will be closed over Christmas from December 24th-January 4th, 2015.

à l'année prochaine,

Kirsty Peterson, Chapter Support & Outreach, CPF BC & YT

New National Executive Director

CPF congratulates Nicole Thibault on her appointment. Effective December 1, 2014, Ms. Thibault will be leading the Ottawa-based National staff under the stewardship of the CPF National Board of Directors.

Ms. Thibault brings over 20 years combined leadership experience as an executive director, vice principal, educational consultant and teacher whose personal and professional passion is centered on the promotion of a bilingual Canada for all those who call Canada home. She will replace Robert Rothon, whose three-year term as the former National Executive Director ended on August 22, 2014.

New National President

Philip Fenez was recently electeda s our new National President. He has been involved in CPF for 9 years. He became involved early on in his children’s education. He has 3 children in grades 8, 10 and 12. He has been involved on the Parent Advisory Council as well as other boards across the province of Manitoba for many years.

While the school division his children attend has been a great supporter of French Immersion he saw this as an opportunity to support and grow French Second-Language learning at more than the local level. He has served on the Manitoba Branch board where he has seen the struggles of various Chapters to get French Immersion started or to maintain the little bit they have. As well as being able to work with the Provincial government in partnership building.

Chapter Rep Training

Some exciting things have been happening at the Branch in the last few months. We have been working on a Chapter Rep training program for new chapters, and chapters who have recently had a changed executive. We will be piloting this project once it is completed and there will be both a face-to-face and web based componenent, to make sure no Chapter is left out!

This will be in addition to the Chapter Manual and Chapter Executive Guide that gets sent out after the time Chapters have their AGMs and we get the new executive reports. If you did not get yours, you can find them here:

National Branding Initiative

At the National Conference in Ottawa, we got a sneak peek at the new CPF logo and messaging. It was great to hear some simple, concise and accurate messages that reflect the work we all do everyday!

CPF National hired a company called Stiff Sentences to iron out exactly what we do, how we do it and why what we do is relevant in today's world. They put together something fresh, new and completely different from what we are used to, and set us off with an implementation plan.

There will be a roll-out of the new brand and all of the Chapters will be provided with the fonts, logos and guide to how to implement this new strategy. Stay tuned!

Concours

CPF’s Concours d’art oratoire is Canada’s largest, annual French-‐‑language public-‐‑speakingcompetition, involving close to 100,000 students every year, and thousands of dollars worth of prizes.

The aims of this public speaking contest are to stimulate the interest of students learning French, toimprove their oral skills, and to give them experience speaking in public.

Starting in December, teachers start getting this students ready to work on their speeches in the new year. CPF Chapter and School Districts often work together to host the regional competitions where the winners go on to compete at Provincials.

OESEF - Exchanges

OSEF (Organisme de Séjours Educatifs Francophones), a Belgianassociation founded in 1994 by Christine LENFANT, promotes linguistic and cultural exchanges between France, Belgium and Spain and all Canadian provinces.

OSEF also has partners in Ontario: CEEF. OSEF is supported by Canadian school boards and their French equivalent “Rectorats”. It also has the support of the Ministry of Education in Belgium.
Summer Exchange: about 100 students participate every year in our 1 month home stay program. Canadian students spend the month of July in France, return with their French exchange partner, and the French students leave at the end of August.

9 & 11 week program: each year, in August, over 300 students from different regions of France, Belgium and Spain participate in a 9 or 11 weeks exchange to Canada. These exchanges are for students aged 12 to 17. European students stay in Canada from around mid-August until the beginning of November. All stay with their exchange partner’s family and attend school where they are given an attendance report. The Canadian students go to Europe from February to the end of April/beginning of May (depending on the date of arrival in February) the following year. They also have to attend their exchange partner’s school.
