This Newsletter serves as an update to all our supporters and loyal funders on exciting activities and developments within our organisation during the past & upcoming months.

 

AFRICA OIL AND POWER (AOP) 2019 CONFERENCE

CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE

Africa Oil & Power announced before their annual flagship energy networking event during October 2019, that the Salesian Institute Youth Projects would be its new community partner.

“We are privileged to be working with the Salesian Institute, as their mission is so fully in line with our #MakeEnergyWork theme for this year’s Africa Oil & Power Conference,” said Guillaume Doane, CEO of Africa Oil & Power

The Learn to Live School choir opened the event with songs and received emotional cheers from the audience. Our learners and our organization were part of to a global event which cemented networking and collaboration opportunities. Thank you for this amazing exposure AOP!

 

Learn to Live School

Sport plays an important role

The Learn to Live School focuses on providing education  and   vocational  skills  training   to youth between the ages of 14 and 18 from at-risk  communities.  Western  Province   LSEN (School  for  learners  with  special   education needs)   Soccer   trails   took   place    during September  and  learners   from our Learn to Live School, had  an opportunity to select five participants to participate in the trials. Three students  from  our  group  were  chosen   to represent the Western Province LSEN Soccer Team.  The  students  selected  were   Aiden Hendricks,    Xhanti   Pama    and     Nkubeko Khabingesi and our  own   Gavin  Fortuin was chosen  as  the  coach of the   Western Cape LSEN Soccer team.

Waves of Change

Preparing youth to work in the Maritime Industry

The Waves of Change Programme has to date  assisted 93 men and women between the ages of 25 and 35  to complete  the  orientation  and life skills  training at SIYP. With the  assistance of   our   maritime   partners,  they  are  in  the process of  completing  all  relevant   training required to be issued with a seaman’ logbook that will enable them to seek employment  in the maritime industry. This programme  offers opportunities  for at-risk youth  to  pursue   a career in this industry.

Porsche PTRC-ZA

2nd Cohort well on their way

The first intake of Porsche PTRC-ZA students graduated    in   July   2019 as      Mechatronic Technicians. The 23 young men  and   woman will now be placed in employment  with  the assistance of the local Porsche importer and the  VW  network. The  2nd  intake  of  youth from disadvantage backgrounds took place in June and they are now fully invested in the 3-year Porsche Automotive Mechatronics Programme.

Fundraising Event

Spring high tea

SIYP hosted a Spring High Tea on Saturday the 8th  of  September  at  our premises  in  Green Point. This event turned  out  to  be  one filled  with  the excitement  and celebration of  newly   formed    friendships, support  and  collaboration.  The sustainability of the vital programmes SYIP offers to youth at-risk is dependent on donations. We treasure our supporters.

NEW PROGRAMMES COMING SOON

The NEETs Work Readiness Programme will be launched in 2020.

The term NEET's describes youth not employed or in education or in training between the ages of 18 to 24 from disadvantaged communities.

The Salesian Institute Youth Projects will be offering a 12-month  dynamic portfolio-based programme facilitating the following outcomes:
