On the 1st and 2nd of August 2018 in the Discovery Kids' room, West Australian author Sally Murphy visited O.L.G. She mainly talked about her famous book ‘Do Not Forget Australia’ based on a sign in Villers Bretonneux. In a school in the north of France, was a sign saying, ‘Do Not Forget Australia’. She was puzzled at her first sighting of the sign, but it turns out, after some handy research, she found out that in the First World War, the Australian soldiers helped the people of France and Villers Bretonneux by fighting the Germans. If the Germans were to get through Villers Bretonneux, they would have power of the railways to get to nearby capital city Paris. But, that didn’t happen, because the Australian soldiers fought hard and fought well as they beat the Germans and protected Villers Bretonneux and
France. After the war, children of Victoria raised money to help them rebuild their school. We really enjoyed listening to her stories. ART NEWS Jackson Rose – Year One The following year six children helped younger children in the school to create a woven group submission that is also on display. Ruby Quigley We have just been informed that Maisie Brown and Jackson Rose have received awards. This is a great honour and an amazing achievement for the individuals and the school. After the award ceremony I will update you on what they have won. Congratulations Maisie and Jackson! Donna Deed RoboCup News Robocup was held on Friday 4 August and saw 12 students competing across three different categories. Our Line RescueTeam consisted of Cosimo Trichilo, Luke Smelter, Oliver Stupple and Ethan Boss. This challenge required the boys to program their robot to follow a black line over a variety of pathways on white tiles. The aim was to reach the ‘victim’ in the green tiled ‘danger zone’ and push them to rescue. The boys worked hard and their efforts were dedicated, scoring well on the day. Our Onstage Performance Team consisted of Sophia Thirza Joyce, Madeleine Budas, Eliza Caputi and Charlotte Selth. The girls were to program multiple robots to perform to music to either dance to the beat or tell a story. Their robots performed well on the day, were synchronized and well dressed! Stellar performance! Our final team was the Soccer Team, consisting of Nicholas DiFalco, Riley Burns, Tai Maxwell and Owen Buck. The boys were required to program their robots to chase a ball into their goals with a second robot as a goalie, protecting their side. Several exciting and stressful matches later, the boys were through to the finals on Saturday morning where they were narrowly heated to place fourth overall. These students have been dedicated to working on these challenges both during lunchtimes, after school and together on weekends. They’re to be commended for their efforts and hard work. We are super proud of all of you!! Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 29th August - it will be beneficial for as many dads and father figures to attend as possible as we have a special guest coming along to launch The Fathering Project (http://thefatheringproject.org/) which aims to improve child development outcomes by inspiring and equipping fathers and father figures to engage positively with their kids. For schools, social media connects students, parents, teachers, and the school itself. It does this by sharing recent activities that the children and teachers have been participating in. Social media can also help spread school news or certain occasions, such as parent events or sports day. This is really helping children connect with their parents more too, creating conversations between them about work that has been posted by the school. We have had a social presence on facebook for over two years and have recently added Twitter and Instagram to reach all demographics. We acknowledge the original custodians of this land, the Nyungar people, and show our respect for their ancestors and traditions. Our Lady of Grace School |
