A nationwide audit of the FreeStyle Libre by the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD) has revealed improved diabetes control in people with type 1 diabetes during the first six months of usage. Using the flash glucose monitoring device led to lower glucose levels in people with high levels before use of the device and a reduction in hypoglycaemia, according to the audit. A reduction in basal insulin of between 50% to 80% performed 90 minutes before physical activity improves blood glucose control and reduces hypoglycaemia risk during exercise in people with type 1 diabetes, new research has found. To reduce exercise-associated hypoglycaemia, people with the condition on continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion typically perform basal rate reductions (BRRs) and/or increase carbohydrate intake to counter the risk of low blood glucose, but the timing and amount of basal rate reductions (BRRs) necessary to prevent hypoglycaemia are unclear. A C-peptide test carried out three years after a type 1 diabetes diagnosis can uncover a misdiagnosis in some cases, new research has found. It can occasionally lead to a correct diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or a monogenic form of the condition and should be a routine procedure, say researchers led by Dr Mark Strachan from Edinburgh’s Western General Hospital.
