President's Column

Dear Members and Friends,

Welcome to AIBC’s first newsletter for 2019, which comes as both Australia and Indonesia gear up for important national elections (Indonesia on 17 April, and Australia most likely in May). Both countries are of course grappling with the very dynamic international trade environment, dominated by the US and China, which has reportedly seen a recent trend of China based businesses looking to relocate to Indonesia as a hedge against future trade sanctions.

Between Australia and Indonesia, 2018 ended with IA-CEPA finalised by negotiators, but awaiting signing by our respective leaders, and we now remain hopeful that a window may present itself in the early part of this year to move this forward. AIBC continues to maintain contact with our governments to follow progress and press for IA-CEPA to be advanced. Of course, despite the delay, there is still much activity by our Members and other groups as they go about their existing business and explore new opportunities, that exist with or without IA-CEPA.

On another front, all would be aware of the terrible series of natural disasters that Indonesia suffered over 2018, and hopefully these will be less prevalent in the months ahead. As yet another strong and important linkage between our countries, Australia has always been at the ready to assist in the aftermath of these tragedies, and also proactively through initiatives such as the Australia-Indonesia Partnership in Disaster Risk Management.

Through the year, we look forward to delivering a diverse and interesting program of events around the country, and also look forward to joining our colleagues from the Indonesia Australia Business Council for their Conference to be held in Bali 3-5 November. Whilst planning for this Conference is still in the early days, it would be worth putting these dates in your diary.

Wishing you a successful year ahead.

Aceh Parliament Visit to ICH

A large delegation of 16 representatives from the Aceh Parliament visited Melbourne recently, and was hosted in a “getting to know you” meeting by the Australia Indonesia Business Council. Representatives from the province included the heads and members of Commissions 5 and 7, who oversee the government's interests in education and tourism. The delegation was also keen to learn more about agriculture. AIBC Vice-Chair Helen Brown had a discussion on these areas of interest, with the delegation specifying that they were keen to learn more about programs that improved the English language skills of students, to provide them with greater options for further study and work. There was also an interest in cattle farming. If anyone would like a preliminary introduction to explore these areas of interest then please contact the AIBC office at executiveofficer@aibc.com.au or Helen at  helen.brown@bisnisasia.com

Makassar and Bali Tourism Forums 2019

The eastern archipelago has some of Indonesia’s most impressivetourism assets. The Government of Indonesia is investing trillions of rupiah in major developments in the region to stimulate tourism as a driver of economic growth. While there are challenges, there are also potentially significant investment and commercial opportunities for Australian business.

The Australian Consulates-General in Bali and Makassar are coordinating efforts to raise awareness of the considerable expertise that Australia has to offer in the tourism development industry. We are also seeking to promote greater insight into tourism development in eastern Indonesia and to identify opportunities for Australian investors in areas such as construction, hotel and restaurant development, the provision of tourism activity services and human resource development and training.

We will be bringing together government, academia, Australian business and NGOs to discuss challenges, explore investment and commercial opportunities and encourage partnerships in the eastern provinces of Indonesia.

The Australian Consulate-General in Makassar will host the Australia-Eastern Indonesia Tourism Forum on 4-5 March 2019 in Makassar.

The Australian Consulate-General in Bali will host an Island Tourism Forum in Lombok on 29-30 April 2019.

Our Fora will provide exciting platforms for connecting Australian tourism industry players with Indonesian counterparts and tourism development decision-makers. See links to our flyers.

The United States in a Changing World - an AIBC and AIIA collaborative event

General Joseph W. Ralston in conversation with Richard Iron CMG, OBE.

This event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.

Under American leadership, the period since the Second World War has seen unprecedented economic growth, the expansion of liberal democracy and an absence of inter-state war for much of the free world. But a combination of factors, including reduced global engagement by America, the rise of China, religious extremism, information technology and global economic recession, has challenged the post-war rules-based global order.

Everywhere, the assumptions underpinning many of our international institutions and partnerships are being called into question, from the UN to the World Bank, from NATO to the International Maritime Organisation.

In this conversation, Joseph Ralston will explore with Richard Iron the international challenges posed by China, Russia, Iran, North Korea and Extremism; all against a backdrop of polarisation and uncertainty in the American political landscape. He will discuss the implications for the USA, international organisations and multilateral partnerships and examine opportunities for the future and the keys for mutual prosperity.

Please click here to register for this event.  Note:  Photo ID will be required on the evening.

AIBC was delighted to be represented at the recent opening of the Svara Library at the Karya Mulia School for deaf children in Surabaya, East Java.

Funds for the teachers’ professional library section were provided by AIBC at our Conference in Perth at the end of 2016, as part of our support for initiatives underpinning the Western Australia – East Java Sister State relationship.

Australian Companies, Public Diplomacy and CSR: Opportunities Lost?

Australian companies are amongst the most responsible and conscientious of those operating in Indonesia. They fulfil regulatory obligations, pay competitive wages, and pursue CSR projects - often at their own volition. But who actually knows this?

Without proper public diplomacy and forthcoming documentation, Australian companies forgo the opportunity to demonstrate their contribution to Indonesian society. In effect, they miss a fundamental marketing opportunity.

What we are looking for?

SOLA Kreatif Media is searching for CSR projects carried out by Australian companies operating in Indonesia. We want to document your efforts and tell your story of transformational change. Our goal is to improve the perception of Australian companies in the eyes of everyday Indonesians.  To read more on this article, click here.

'No country is more important to Australia than Indonesia. If we fail to get this relationship right, and nurture and develop it, the whole web of our foreign relations is incomplete.'

Indonesia’s Terregra readies to break ground on its second SA solar farm

After it launched construction on its first solar project in Australia last month, Indonesia’s Terregra Renewables is all set to break ground on another 5 MW solar farm in South Australia.

A newcomer to Australian solar, Indonesia’s Terregra Renewables, has announced plans to start construction of a 5 MW Moyhall Solar Farm in South Australia,  its second solar project Down Under.

The project located around 7 km south of Naracoorte was waved through by the planning authorities in August 2018. According to the developer, construction is scheduled to commence in March, and last until August this year.  To continue reading the entire article, please click here.

Listings for Mineral and Coal Exploration Companies

In his latest article, Bill Sullivan of Christian Teo & Partners, looks at proposed changes affecting the listing of Mineral and Coal exploration companies.

"The Indonesia Stock Exchange is proposing to allow, for the first time, public offerings by and listings of mineral and coal exploration companies even though they have no revenue history.

As Indonesian exploration activity has almost ceased entirely, any initiative that may make it easier for exploration companies to obtain capital is to be welcomed.

It should be recognized, however, that the impediments to new exploration activity in Indonesia are actually less about access to capital and more about fundamental policy and regulatory issues facing the local mining industry; particularly, when it comes to foreign investor participation in exploration activity.”
