CLICK, PARK & COLLECT McDonald’s is testing capacity to deliver takeaway orders to guests’ cars so they can avoid lengthy drive-thru queues. The plan is to make this service available at all UK restaurants this autumn, if proven successful in the three pilot restaurants. The new rollout allows customers to order from the reduced menu via the app and wait in the newly signposted car park bays for their food to be delivered directly to their car window. Each car park bay number is assigned to an order upon payment and will be prepared and delivered in takeout bags by staff wearing face masks, as per restaurant guidelines. 2. LEON'S NEW MEAL BOXESLeon recently launched paleo-friendly boxes packed with protein and flavour. The boxes contain roasted vegetables drizzled with zhoug, an herby Middle Eastern dressing, topped with either paprika chicken and garlic aioli or grilled aubergine and sumac onions. Both options are under 400 calories and use seasonal British vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli and celeriac to suit a variety of dietary needs, truly living up to their slogan: Naturally Fast Food. 3. FILTHY BUNS NEW CREATIONNational Burger Day falls on August 27th and to celebrate, burger brand, Filthy Buns, has created a limited-edition burger called the ‘McFilthy’, a tribute to the iconic Big Mac. Filthy Buns is based in Dalston, UK, infamous for its uniquely wild burgers- and the ‘McFilthy’ is no different. Meat lovers can choose a 45-day, dry age beef patty with melted Red Leicester cheese, while flexitarians can enjoy a juicy plant-based patty layered with vegan cheese. Both options come topped with the brand’s new secret sauce, house pickles, onions and mustard. 4. LATEST LAUNCHES IN THE U.S.QSRs in the United States are unleashing new menu items as people venture to eat out post lockdown. Qdoba Mexican Eats introduced a Chicken Queso Burrito, Steak Fajita Quesadilla, Street Style Chicken Taco and a plant-based Impossible Fajita Bowl. All new offerings can be topped with traditional Mexican ingredients like guacamole, pico de gallo, salsa, queso, rice and beans. Wendy’s has a new Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich, featuring chicken breast strips marinated in a spicy blend, breaded, fried and then served with lettuce and mayonnaise on a warm bun. Lastly, Pizza Guys created a Texas Barbeque Pizza using smoked bacon, grilled chicken, spicy barbecue sauce, mozzarella cheese and red onions. 5. TESCO'S PLANT-BASED CHRISTMASTesco has launched a complete plant-based festive range for Christmas this year. The Plant Chef Pigless Blankets were a firm favourite in 2019, with this year’s crowd-pleaser set to be a vegan turkey crown served with an array of plant-based treats from the Wicked Kitchen and Plant Chef ranges. Catering to vegetarians, vegans and flexitarians, consumers can expect to find No Mozzarella Sticks and Sage & Onion Stuffing Balls, made with pea protein and vegetable suet as well as No-Chicken Drumettes and No-Prawn Firecracker Dippers. To cover dessert, the range includes vegan Ginger Chai Cake and Mince Pies. 6. IRISH BRANDS UK DEBUTIrish restaurant brands WowBurger & New York-style Elephant & Castle of Press Up Hospitality Group have confirmed debut UK sites in Doncaster, UK. WowBurger primarily serves burgers with a variety of toppings alongside home-cut fries, milkshakes and sundaes. Elephant & Castle offers New York-style wings, ribs, fresh salads and other American favourites. Both restaurants are set to open towards the end of this year and with over 2,800 square foot and 4,000 square foot respectively, the group is keen to offer choice, quality and experience to the local community as consumers venture out of lockdown. 7. CAMILE THAI'S BRIGHT FUTUREThe founder of Camile Thai Kitchen welcomes the unique situation COVID-19 has presented for the business with like for like sales up 35% in London amid lockdown. The chain plans to open dark kitchens in September, whereby food is prepared at solely takeaway premises rather than onsite at a restaurant. With over 30 locations across London and Ireland, Camile Thai Kitchen is looking for new ventures across the UK and is set to launch drone deliveries next year via Manna. As businesses further aim to embrace technology and innovation, the founder of the restaurant chain sees robotics as an opportunity for chains to reduce operating labour costs and improve efficiencies. 8. SAUSAGES GET A FLAVOUR UPGRADEWith a seismic shift in the food industry so far this year, attention is brought to the humble sausage which readily taps into the trends of comfort eating and those looking to travel with their taste buds. Sausages get a flavour upgrade with these ten creative combinations grounding culinary know-how in current and future trends. Brats and Frankfurters offer a rich hearty flavour, ideal with a smoky BBQ sauce and melted cheese, while the Italian sausage comes to life with rocket, sweet peppers and feta. The thick-cut bologna and poultry sausage tempt the travelling taste buds with South American, Middle Eastern and Asian fusions. TURKEY TWIZZLERS BIG RETURNTurkey Twizzlers are making a comeback after 15 years. Bernard Matthews has relaunched the product through a light-hearted social media campaign. For a bit of backstory on the controversial product, Turkey Twizzlers were removed from school menus by Jamie Oliver in 2005 for perceived lack of nutritional benefits. In 2018, nearly 30,000 people signed a petition for Turkey Twizzlers to make a welcome return to supermarket shelves. Due to popular demand, the brand has reformulated the product to contain twice as much turkey meat and fewer calories, with the launch featuring two different flavours: Original Tangy Tomato and Chilli Cheese.
