Cyberpornography Causes Varying Degrees of Distress Among Users

Distress over cyberpornography use depends on the type of user, suggests a recent study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Past research on the effects of cyberpornography has had mixed results. Some experts believe users can benefit from cyberpornography, as it can stimulate sexual desire and arousal. It can also provide some sexual education and give couples a starting point when discussing new sexual routines.

On the other hand, some experts feel that cyberpornography is detrimental, fostering sexual distress, addiction, and unrealistic expectations.

For the current study, 830 people between the ages of 18 and 78 (average age 25) completed questionnaires on their use of cyberpornography and their sexual health. Seventy-two percent of the study subjects were women.

Based on the data, the participants generally fell into three categories.

About three-quarters of users, many of them women and couples, were considered recreational. They had higher rates of sexual satisfaction and lower rates of sexual dysfunction.

Twelve percent of users were classified as compulsive users. Mostly men, these participants felt more sexual compulsion and higher rates of distress.

About 13% of users fell into the highly distressed, non-compulsive category. While this group used pornography the least, they had the highest degrees of distress among the three profiles discussed.
