Important: ArtsFest Date Moved to June

Due to a delay in Town Hall's extensive renovations, the ArtsFest date has been moved. Our new ArtsFest 2019 dates are June 3 for the in-school celebration and June 4 for the Gala performance.

What this means for your student:

  • Thursdays, March 7 and 14 are now regular class days.
  • Monday, June 3 will be our all-day, in-school celebration of the arts.
  • Turesday, June 4 will be our Gala, and student performers will leave class after lunch to spend the afternoon at rehearsal
  • Friday, May 31 will be the last day of regular classes for seniors.

Oba Access for Parents

Oba provides an overview of the assignments and work your students are completing in their courses. If you have not yet used Oba, need help getting logged in, or have any questions about Oba, please feel free to contact Ed Tech Coordinator Shie Benaderet.

Summits Program Available Now!

In March 18-29, 2019, our students and faculty will participate in Summits. These cross-curricular and cross-graded explorations engage students and faculty members in deep studies that are rooted in our school's values, history, and mission. Summits are unique experiences, providing paths to active engagement with global citizenship, environmental sustainability, social justice, curricular exploration, and community passions.

Students are required to complete one Summit each academic year as part of the school’s graduation requirement. These classes are part of a student’s academic record and will appear on transcripts. International trips fulfill this requirement for the year of travel.

Please take a minute to learn about the Summits that will be offered this year.

  • The course catalog can be found here.
  • Check out the Flipgrid of faculty explaining their Summits here.
  • If you have questions about the individual Summits, please contact the faculty listed in the catalog.

Online registration forms will be available beginning Friday, Nov. 9, and will be due Nov. 16.

6th-9th Grade Student/Parent/Guardian/Advisor Conference Sign-Ups Now Online!

This year, we are using Google Forms to schedule student/parent/guardian/advisor conferences. These conferences will be on Friday, Dec. 7. Conferences are an important touch-point between the school and families as we work together for student success. Students and advisors prepare to make this a productive time. There are no classes for students on this day. A link to the conference sign-up surveys was emailed to 6th-9th grade parents this week. Please refer to the email for further instructions on how to schedule your conference.

If you would like to have an optional student/parent/guardian/advisor conference with the advisor of your 10th, 11th, or 12th grader, you should contact your student’s advisor directly.

If you have questions or experience issues with signing up, please call Kiara Littlejohn at 206-816-6027.

Music Department Presents Fall Concert, Nov. 14

When: Nov. 14, 7:00 pm
Where: Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute

All of the Middle School and Upper School music ensembles invite you to an evening of fantastic performances! This special night includes the performances of our Intro to Orchestra and Intro to Band classes, our larger-than-ever Middle School Band and Orchestra, our Upper School Jazz Band and Choirs, and the Upper School Orchestra providing a preview of this year's musical Newsies (with the cast singing along). Don't miss it!

Fall Blood Drive at Northwest, Nov. 13

Bloodworks Northwest will bring its mobile collection van to the south parking lot on Tuesday, Nov. 13, for our first blood drive of the year. Anyone in the Northwest School community is welcome to participate. Donors must be 16 or older; students ages 16 or 17 need to bring a parent-signed permission form (available here or at the front desk) to their donation appointment. More information and specifics about donor restrictions can be found on the Bloodworks Northwest website. Each pint donated can help three patients in need, so please give!

Thanks to everyone who has already signed up. Times are still available between 9:00 am-1:45 pm. The sign-up board is located outside the main office. If you have questions, please contact Heather Hall or Herb Bergamini.

Save the Date for Holiday on the Hill, Dec. 2

Join the entire Northwest School community on Sunday, Dec. 2, for Holiday on the Hill, a family-friendly event that supports our library.

No RSVP is required to come to Elliott Bay Book Company (6:00-8:30 pm). If you want to enjoy food and beverage at Optimism Brewing beforehand (5:00-6:30 pm), please RSVP by completing this online form by Nov. 21. All ages are welcome at both stops. Contact Julie Lombardo with any questions.

Do you have or know an alumni? Send them to the Alumni Happy Hour at Little Oddfellows (RSVP required, all ages welcome).

Middle School Enrichment Classes

We have a slate of after school enrichment classes for Middle School lined up in January. We will be offering Machine Sewing, Tech Creations, Nature Spa, and Dungeon School. Each class is offered by a community partner organization that specializes in teaching their topic. Descriptions can be found here and registration is open now. Classes are held after school, 3:45-5:15 pm, for eight weeks. These programs are designed for Middle School students, but interested Upper School students may be admitted, space permitting.

Limited amount of financial aid is available through the Northwest School Experience Fund. Contact Leilani Nussman, extended learning director, to make arrangements.

Annual Fund Giving Update

A shout-out to eighth grade parents for reaching a 44 percent participation rate! Thanks to all the 8th grade families who already made a gift to get us to this level!

If you haven’t yet participated, we hope you’ll join others in your child’s grade with a commitment today. Remember, you can pledge now, and pay later–simply communicate your intended gift amount and spread the payment out between now and June 30.

Our goal is 100 percent parent participation. Contact Julie Lombardo (206-816-6208) with any questions.

Middle School Basketball Clinics

We would like to invite your students to join our Middle School Winter Basketball Clinics! The clinics will be led by Northwest Upper School basketball players and coaches. The clinics will focus on developing individual fundamentals in a team-oriented, encouraging, and fun environment. Students will participate in skill-building drills, individual competitions, and scrimmages. Participants will also receive a camp t-shirt.

Suggested fee is $40 (but is not required; please pay what you are able). This event is open to any students grades 5-8, including both Northwest and non-Northwest students, so please feel free to spread the word! Contact Britt Atack with any questions.
