Our purpose is that Ethnic Communities are strong and the benefits of ethnic diversity for New Zealand are realised. Minister's UpdateThis is a good time of year to consider opportunities for governance roles. The Office of Ethnic Communities keeps a database of New Zealanders from ethnic communities who are suitably qualified to be considered for appointment to a number of government boards, committees and advisory groups. The nominations service seeks to increase ethnic representation in leadership and governance positions. Director's updateThe General Election is just around the corner on Saturday 23 September. The Office of Ethnic Communities encourages all eligible voters from our communities to participate in this important exercise of democracy in New Zealand. New Zealand is an active member of the United Nations and a signatory to important international human rights conventions. In Remembrance of Wenceslaus AnthonyThe Office of Ethnic Communities was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Wenceslaus Anthony on 23 July in Chennai, India, aged 59. He was closely associated with us and supported our EPIC (Ethnic People in Commerce) conferences as a speaker on a number of occasions. Losing momentum school leavers' Asia engagementThe Asia New Zealand Foundation has released a report, Losing Momentum – School Leavers’ Asia Engagement, which looks at New Zealand school leavers’ readiness for engaging with Asia. The report outlines the results of a survey of more than 1,000 senior school students and their level of Asia awareness. The questions asked were about cultural competencies and knowledge of Asia, and the perceived importance of Asia to New Zealand.
