Social movements in action; standing shoulder to shoulder

'We can move' aims to stand shoulder to shoulder with individuals and organisations to get everyone in Gloucestershire active.

Standing shoulder to shoulder is one of our shared principles which guide how we behave. A principle that the events of the last month have taught us we can do more on. We can move does not belong to any one group or organisation and we want to be all in this together.

In June, we have heard Black Lives Matter and we have had to reflect on the fact that access to spaces and opportunities is not the same for all people. We are reflecting on what we are doing to make sure we are all in this together; regardless of race, age, gender, disability, religious and cultural beliefs and sexual orientation.

June was Pride month, one that was quietly marked as the movement for the inclusion of LGBT+ people and stood shoulder to shoulder with Black Lives Matter; showing in action the Stonewall movement slogan of ‘acceptance without exception’.

Getting out of lockdown

It has been over 100 days of restrictions and as we begin to move out of lockdown, we know that many people are struggling to stay active at home or outdoors.

Sport England research shows that over a third of people reported doing less activity than before lockdown. Many facilities are still closed and looking into how to reopen safely.

How can individuals and organisations support the transition from staying in to going out? There may be anxiety about this change and different family situations and households will require different support.

What do we need to think about to encourage people back to our physical activity spaces, aside from social distancing and hygiene guidelines?

There are creative ideas such as Swingballdon and conversations happening like those in the Cotswolds that can help with this transition. In the Forest of Dean you will find virtual exercise classes, phone calls from friendly instructors and access a range of leaflets and exercise guides.

Get Out Get Active in the Forest of Dean

Get out Get Active in the Forest of Dean engages older people and those with dementia to be active together.

There are stark differences in activity levels between those with disabilities and long-term conditions and non-disabled people. Get Out Get Active in the Forest of Dean aims to break these barriers down and create genuinely inclusive environments.

Have your say in the Cotswolds

Cotswold Dictrict Council would like to know how you have been doing before and during the COVID-19 lockdown, and how you think this might change in the future.

Responses to the survey will help the council understand more about the different barriers that can prevent people from being active and using their local leisure centres, and what the council can do to support and encourage people to lead more active and healthy lives.

Swingballdon all over Gloucestershire

Get outside, get active and have fun playing swingball; a perfect activity for small groups.

Taking place from 29 June – 12 July (when Wimbledon 2020 would have been held), Swingballdon is about challenging your friends and families to games of swingball with the chance to become Swingballdon champion! Get your friends or mums, dads, brothers, and sisters to take part in mini-competitions and have fun.
