WISCONSIN CONCRETE PARK, Phillips, Wisconsin, USA
Lumberjack, farmer and musician Fred Smith (1886–1976) started work on his sculpture park in his mid-sixties. He had already built his Rock Garden Tavern next to his home, using collected stones bound with cement. Smith built some 200 sculptures depicting human and animal forms, constructed from concrete placed over rough wooden armatures, with the surfaces covered with coloured rocks, broken crockery and glass.
His numerous figures include Ben Hur, the Statue of Liberty, Abraham Lincoln, Kit Carson and the famous lumberjack Paul Bunyan, while animals include elks, deer, moose and numerous horses. After Smith’s death the site was purchased by Kohler Foundation, Inc., which funded an initial restoration and gifted the site to Price County in 1978.
Since 1995 it has undergone major restoration and has been maintained by the Friends of Fred Smith organisation. There is now an ongoing conservation programme with regular newsletters. Fred Smith is featured in our Outsider Art Sourcebook, currently half price!
