1. Avian influenza controls tighten in UK

12.11.2020. UK/Japan. Avian Influenza

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been introduced after a third case of bird flu in domestic flocks, with strict biosecurity measures. In Japan, a case of HPAI has been detected in a layer flock in Kagawa, the first in the country since 2018.

2. Wood ear mushrooms sickens 55 with salmonellosis in 12 states

07.11.2020. USA. Salmonella

The Salmonella Stanley outbreak investigation showed that wood ear mushrooms were the likely source. Illnesses started from Jan to Sept, with cases ranging in age from 2 to 74 years. Fifty-seven percent of those sickened were female. Of 48 ill people with information available, six have been hospitalized. No deaths were reported.

3. Research finds UK consumers highly value EU food safety standards

Recent research reveals the extent to which UK consumers dislike food produced using production methods such as hormones in beef, and chlorine washed chicken. The authors of the study say their findings are particularly relevant for post-Brexit trade deals and the ongoing debates about UK food standards.

4. Another E. coli out break spanning 6 states linked to romaine

10.11.2020. USA. E. coli

The third outbreak in three weeks of E. Coli O157: H7 infections of unknown origin under investigation. Although the cause is unknown, the CDC has said recalled romaine lettuce has tested positive for the outbreak strain of the pathogen.

5. Fish recall due to histamine poisoning outbreak

11.11.2020. New Zealand. Histamine

Trevally fish fillets are being recalled in New Zealand due links to at least three cases of histamine poisoning, also known as scombroid poisoning.

6. Increase in campylobacter hits Sweden

There is a rise in the number of Campylobacter infections in Sweden, following a temporary decline in numbers. Chicken has been identified as a common source.
