The State of National Disaster declared a week ago has put South Africa into "lockdown-lite" with a formal policy of social distancing declared, the early closure of schools and tertiary institutions. President Ramaphosa has announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown on the evening of 23 March which will take effect 26 March midnight. The Salesian Institute Youth Projects adhered to our Presidents' call and closed the Learn to Live School early as did the Porsche PTRC-ZA Programme starting their term break early. The Waves Waves of Change Programme will close down Thursday 26 March. The reopening of all programmes will be considered after the 16th of April. All staff have been requested to work from home. Which means that we will continue with our fundraising efforts, development of training programmes, and making ourselves available to our beneficiaries and funders via telephone, social media platforms, website and email. This disease treats us all equally and our prayers are with all those affected.
Successful Completion 1st TermThe Learn to Live School has 232 learners enrolled, with 39 Year-4 students completing their final year at the school. A very successful Year-4 camp took place during the 1st week of February for 4 days at Princess Vlei Eco Centre. The benefits to the learners in terms of personal growth, teamwork and self-esteem were invaluable. This preparation inspired the learners to be hopeful and invest everything they have into completing this year with confidence. Waves of Change ProgrammePreparing youth for employment opportunities in the maritime industry remains a focal point that is executed with dedication by the facilitation team and the 1st Cohort successfully completed. The life skills component allows the participants to speak through their daily struggles. Many of the young men resort to crime in order to provide for their families. Life skills instil in them the knowledge that by investing in themselves, they will eventually be able to make a living without committing a crime. The Salesian Institute Youth Projects Provides an alternative to a life of crime, poverty and hopelessness. We want to urge all our beneficiaries and supporters to stay safe.
