SA drivers released from “lock in”
SA drivers have been freed from being “locked into” using their vehicle manufacturer's service centres, repair shops and parts with ‘embedded’ motor and service plans, a system that is unique in the world. Draft guidelines for the Automotive Aftermarket sector by the Competition Commission will allow consumers greater freedom. Previously, if vehicle owners used an independent service or repair provider of their choice, vehicle manufacturers could void their warranties.
COVID-19: Business continuity at Safire
On March 11, the World Health Organisation categorised the outbreak of COVID-19 a “global pandemic”. Since then we have seen global and local infection rates climb exponentially, which has understandably caused alarm and anxiety for many. Whilst we are watching and learning daily, the Safire team has implemented sensible and proactive interim measures in an effort to help curb the spread of the Corona Virus whilst still remaining operational and available to our clients.
In addition to the measures taken within Safire, we need to warn our clients that there may be delays for repairs to certain items including cellphones and motor vehicles, because of the slowdown in availability of parts globally. Unfortunately, this situation may also inevitably cause delays in the finalisation of claims.

Postponement of Safire Berg 100
to 13 June 2020
The organisers of the Safire Berg 100 MTB event, scheduled to take place on Saturday, 21 March, in the KZN Midlands, announced the mandatory cancellation / postponement of this popular event due to recently announced restrictions on travel and mass gatherings of people, which form part of government’s measures to try and limit the spread of the Coronavirus. "We are naturally devastated about the prospect of having to cancel this event, which has been so many months in the making," says organiser, Katie Fogg. "However, this is what has to be done to protect our riders and everyone involved in the race, as well as the wider Midlands community. We have tentatively set
a new date of 13 June 2020 for our much-loved race, but this naturally depends on the circumstances. So hopefully this is a postponement rather than a total cancellation of the Safire Berg 100 this year."
Criminals muscle in on avo and macadamia markets
Farmers are being targeted by organised-crime syndicates keen to tap into the lucrative avocado and macadamia nut markets. Thefts range from small-scale opportunist raids to criminally-motivated groups that can strip between 20 to 30 tonnes of avocados in a night for distribution to local sellers. The problem is not contained to SA, with similar problems in other avocado-growing areas across the world including Spain, New Zealand, California and Mexico, where several avo-related killing have occurred. Macadamias are stolen both from trees and from processing facilities, and are then moved out of the country, often through neighbouring countries such as Zimbabwe.
Keeping the lights on in a million homes
Renewable energy is clearly part of Egypt’s future, with the Egyptian government having developed a vast 6-million solar panel complex in the desert, covering an area so large that it can be seen from space.
