FREE PUBLIC LECTURE: Ethics of Geoengineering

Professor Stephen M Gardiner is visiting from the University of Washington, and in this lecture he asks, 'If a climate emergency is possible, is everything permitted?' He will reflect on some ethically slippery arguments for geoengineering.

Prof Gardiner's research focuses on global environmental problems (especially climate change), future generations, and virtue ethics. He is the author of A Perfect Moral Storm: the Ethical Tragedy of Climate Change (Oxford, 2011), the coordinating co-editor of Climate Ethics: Essential Readings (Oxford, 2010), and the editor of Virtue Ethics: Old and New (Cornell, 2005).

Ma Yansong, Founding Principal of MAD will present the next Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning Dean's Lecture entitled, Shan Shui City.

Ma Yansong is recognised as an important voice in a new generation of architects and was hailed as one of the world's most influential and creative young architects by ICON magazine (2008) and Fast Company (2009). This year alone Yansong has been named 2014 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and was listed in the top 100 most creative people in business by Fast Company.

Yansong will present the recent projects of MAD Architects and introduce the architectural idea of "Shan Shui City". To Yansong, this idea does not just refer to nature, but is also a social ideal of a future city that reflects individual emotional response to the surrounding world.

Shanshui City Exhibition by MAD Architects

Dates: Wednesday 30 July - Friday 15 August
Venue: Wunderlich Gallery, 757 Swanston

This exciting exhibition boasts a selection of projects by MAD Architects, visually exploring the architectural idea of Shanshui City, core to the firms work, and the title of the next Dean's Lecture which will be presented by Ma Yansong on Tuesday 5 August. The Shanshui City concept adapts the traditional ethos of spiritual harmony between nature and humanity to the modern urban environment.

The Australian Innovation Challenge

Entries close: Monday 11 August
Total prize pool: $65,000, including $5000 in a Young Innovators category open to students under the age of 21.

Presented by The Australian in association with Shell, The Australian Innovation Challenge aims to reward innovation and future thinking, and has helped drive some of the nation’s best ideas to commercialization or adoption.

Students are invited to share ideas which have the potential to make a difference to our lifestyles, environment, work or play. The award is open to both individuals and teams.

To enter, please submit a 300 word summary of the innovation, a CV and any other assets relevant to the innovation, such as images, videos or links to content.
