A team led by a consultant anaesthetist based in Newport has been named the winner of the prestigious Rowan Hillson Inpatient Safety Award 2019. The team, led by Dr David Burckett-St.Laurent, from the Aneurin Bevin University Health Board, scooped the prize for a cross specialty working group who re-designed the perioperative care pathway for surgical patients with diabetes. Their work led to significant improvements for staff and people with diabetes. Disruption to inpatient diabetes services created positive environments and opportunities for new ways of working, clinicians have stated in a new report. The ‘Inpatient Diabetes Care during the COVID-19 pandemic’ carried out by Diabetes UK highlights the need to take account of the lessons learned during the first peak of COVID-19. Diabetes Professional Care (DPC2020) has vowed to support NHS staff who are being urged to speed up the return to “near-normal levels of non-COVID health services”. Trend Diabetes, an organisation that supports all nurses working in diabetes care has launched a nationwide questionnaire. A campaign to provide vital information about structured blood glucose monitoring to people with diabetes has been launched. The main aim of the National Advisory Panel for Care Home Diabetes is to produce a Strategic Document of Diabetes Care that will provide recommendations focussing on producing the highest possible standards of diabetes care. Guidance about what diabetes and endocrine clinical services can provide during the continue COVID-19 disruption and reduced capacity for clinical teams has been issued. The document, Delivering Diabetes and Endocrine Services in Acute NHS Trusts during COVID-19 Pandemic reset, was formulated by ABCD.
