Catholic Schools Week

While the freezing weather has derailed some of our Catholic Schools Week festivities, it hasn't diminished the enthusiasm for celebrating the 140th Anniversary of Sacred Heart School. Inspired by 140 years of the church's ministry of education, we put it to music with these lyrics, "We come to tell the story, of Jesus, God and Man, whose Sacred Heart reveals God's loving plan."

While we revere the educators and dedicated parents on whose shoulders we stand, we thank the teachers and involved parents who are leading SHES into the future. We welcome the involvement of parents always. Each person makes a big difference and builds the community.

Snow make-up days

We will have a half day on March 28 (previously a day off) and we will have a full day on Friday, April 25 (previously a day off). This is in addition to the previously announced make-up days of Monday, February 17 and Friday, May 23.

Meet the Maestro

The Sacred Heart School response to Meet the Maestro has amazed the organizers of the program at Heinz Hall. To date, there are 350+ SH tickets sold. We will continue to sell tickets online and at the school office until next weekend. The Pittsburgh Symphony performance of The Planets by Holst will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Heinz Hall. There will be a Sacred Heart table inside the front door of Heinz Hall where you can pick up your tickets on Feb. 9. After the performance, our advanced band students and choir will perform for Maestro Manfred Honeck in the lower lobby. Every ticket holder is invited to come to that special assembly.

Snow make-up days

School will now be in session on Monday, February 17 and Friday, May 23. Please note these changes to your calendar.

St. Antoine school in Haiti opens new buildings

Students in Sacred Heart's sister school in Haiti started the school year in new school buildings. The buildings replace those destroyed in the January 2010 earthquake.

After the earthquake, students restarted school within two months, meeting outside at first, and then in temporary buildings put up a few months after the earthquake.

The new school consists of two main buildings connected by an open-air stairwell. They are much stronger than the old ones. The lowest floors are built right into the hillside for stability. Each building has three stories and six classrooms.

The classrooms are filled with natural light.

Open walkways connect the classrooms.

Scrip order update

Scrip orders can be turned in each Thursday from now through March 20. March 20 is the last turn in day for Scrip orders to receive credit for this year’s Family Assessment.

You should have received your latest Scrip report listing purchases and credit to date for the first semester. There is still time to increase your earnings.  Good luck with reaching the $350 goal!

Families who are not earning should have received a reminder letter regarding your commitment. If you chose to pay the assessment and have not done so, the payment is due now.

The Scrip program will resume on May 1. Credit from these earnings will be applied to your 2014-15 Family Assessment.

PSAS financial aid forms

Included in this months envelope are the Private School Aid Service (PSAS) applications for Diocesan financial aid for next year. Look over the income limits and apply if you are eligible.

Forms should be mailed directly to PSAS by March 14 and awards are determined by early June.

Forms are also available for download on the diocesan web site. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the forms.

Confirmation Faith Test begins Feb. 3

By Fr. Robert Grecco

The Confirmation Faith Test for grade 8 begins Monday, February 3. Students will be chosen at random, so everyone should be prepared.

The students have had the answers to the test since September, so a quick review should be all that is necessary. Fr. Grecco will meet with each student individually in the library/hall study area.

International group marks Chinese New Year

Please join us for an International Connections lunch at Plum restaurant at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 5.

Sacred Heart Elementary School is proud to serve families from across the globe. International Connections seeks to extend friendships and encourage cultural understanding by providing get-togethers for parents. All are welcome. Little ones are always welcome!

Please RSVP to Ruth Bence rmbence06@gmail.com or Melissa Johnson melissajo9@yahoo.com.

Easter candy sale starts Feb. 3

The Annual Sarris Easter Candy Sale begins Monday, February 3. The fundraiser runs through Friday February 28.

Christmas basketball tournament a Success!

By Michele Cromer
SHAA President

Thanks to all who helped make our annual Christmas basketball tournament a success. Games went on from noon on December 26 through the evening of December 30.

Congratulations to the Sacred Heart JV boys who made it to the championship. They fell to St. Alphonsus, but put up a good fight. The winner of the varsity boys’ division was St. Mary’s, and the girls’ varsity division victor was St. Alphonsus. The JV boys champion was St. Alphonsus, and St. Bonaventure took home first place for the JV girls.

Congratulations to all the teams. Thank you to Greg Rubinoff for setting up the volunteer website and Kim Moses for coordinating volunteers. A huge thank you to all of the families who spent countless hours in the gym, donating their time. It is much appreciated.

As basketball season winds down, good luck to all the teams as they strive for the playoffs.

7th and 8th grade sports banquet will be May 8

Please save the date! Thursday, May 8 will be the annual Sports Banquet for the 7th and 8th grade.

February's food: Tuna

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school will collect tuna to be contributed to the food bank run by the East End Cooperative Ministry.

Each month, the Student Council members encourage all of us to contribute a different featured food to share with our neighbors in need. Thank you for your support.
