1. Swedish Salmonella outbreak linked to crayfish

A national outbreak of Salmonella in Sweden has been linked to eating a brand of crayfish. With the help of whole genome sequencing, 31 ill people have been identified in the outbreak of Salmonella Newport.

2. Long-term Listeria outbreak solved in Denmark

Danish officials have solved a Listeria outbreak linked to hummus that first affected people in 2016. Statens Serum Institut (SSI), Fødevarestyrelsen (Danish Veterinary and Food Administration) and the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark were involved in the investigation. SSI is the national institute for surveillance and preparedness of human infectious diseases.

3. Germany aligns with EC in confirming novel food classification of CBD

The country's stance mirrors that of the European Commission (EC), which added CBD to its Novel Food Catalogue in January meaning no CBD-containing product can be marketed in the EU and now Germany without authorisation.

4. Salmonella, E. coli O157, Listeria, Campy: 1.9 million foodborne illnesses in US per year

In an ongoing effort to understand sources of foodborne illness in the United States, the Interagency Food Safety Analytics Collaboration (IFSAC) collects and analyzes outbreak data to produce an annual report with estimates of foods responsible for foodborne illnesses caused by pathogens. The report estimates the degree to which four pathogens – Salmonella, E. coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes, and Campylobacter – and specific foods and food categories are responsible for foodborne illnesses.

5. Livestock imports from South Africa suspended in ongoing foot-and-mouth outbreak

13.11.2019. South Africa. Foot and Mouth

Reuters reports that in January, eSwatini, formerly Swaziland, joined Botswana and Zimbabwe in suspending meat imports from South Africa over an outbreak of the highly contagious viral disease, foot-and-mouth, which affects cloven-footed animals - those with divided hooves such as cows, pigs and sheep.

6. Review supports poultry as being major source of Campylobacter

13.11.2019. Europe. Campylobacter

A review has backed the belief that poultry and ruminants are the main sources of Campylobacter infections. The work found more than half of human campylobacteriosis cases were attributed to poultry. Ruminants such as cattle or sheep were also implicated in a substantial proportion of infections.
