Rememering Our Veterans

Please join the Sacred Heart School community on Friday, November 11, in the Activities Building to celebrate Veterans Day. The school choir and the school band, under the direction of Sr. Rosie and Mrs. Sherry Traugh, will perform traditional and poignant patriotic songs. The "Living Flag" will be unfurled during the solemn ceremony.

If you are able to attend the ceremony, please arrive in the gym at 10:30 a.m.

Advent Season is upon us

The Advent Season is a time of prayer and anticipation during the four weeks leading up to Christmas. The liturgical season begins the new church year on Sunday, November 27. Use this special time to focus on the real meaning of Christmas.

The entire school will assemble in the auditorium on Wednesday, November 30 for our Advent Prayer Circle. Half of the student body will pray at 9:00 a.m. and the other half at 9:45 a.m. Students in 2nd grade will lead us in prayer. Parents and friends of our school are invited to come and pray with us.

Welcome Miss Cheponis

Miss Terrilynn Cheponis is our new first grade teacher. Miss Cheponis obtained a B.S. in Elementary Education  and Early Childhood Development from Saint Vincent College. In 2013, she earned a M.Ed. with a specialty in Reading and Language Arts from Duquesne University.  Prior to coming to Sacred Heart, Miss Cheponis taught at North Allegheny School District for four years, and Baden Academy Charter School for just over a year. She is thrilled to join the faculty at Sacred Heart, and we are delighted to have her.

Family Christmas ornaments

As we prepare for the Advent season, we also prepare our Family Christmas Trees at Sacred Heart School. There will be trees on each floor of the school decorated with one ornament from each school family.

If you are new to SHES or haven't yet sent an ornament to represent your family, please send us one. The ornament can be bought or homemade. Please put your family's name on the ornament, along with the year your child(ren) were first enrolled at Sacred Heart School.

We use the ornaments from year to year to remember all who have been part of the school family over time. The children love to put their family ornament on the tree and proudly show it to their friends.

26th annual Love Walk for the poor

Families are invited to participate in the 26th Annual Love Walk for the Poor on Sunday November 13th. Previously held in February, the Love Walk moves to November in honor of Homelessness Awareness month. Join Bishop Winter for 2:00 Mass at Sacred Heart Church and the one mile walk to the East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM) at 6140 Station Street. Non perishable food and infant-care products are welcome and will be distributed afterwards to those in need.

Notes from the Office

This month's envelope contains the Family Directory.  One copy per family was distributed.  Please keep your copy in a safe place.

In addition, the envelope contains your parent/teacher conference form. Please make note of when you are scheduled. Your child(ren)’s report card will be given to you at the conference.

Parent Lunch and Recess Reminders

  • All adults on duty outside should wear a safety vest.
  • Parents should be positioned in separate play areas- one parent at the North end, one parent near the office, and one parent in the middle section.  Limit cell phone use to emergency calls.

Childrens Litury of the Word

The Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place on Sunday, November 20 during 9:30 a.m. Mass for children in grades K - 4. Children are dismissed to the rectory library to listen to the Word of God with the daily readings on an age appropriate level.  If you have any questions, please contact Sharon Smoller at sacredheartparishreled@gmail.com.

Family Rosary

Pope Francis has asked us to celebrate as a community a year dedicated to mercy. This Holy Year of Mercy is a time to help us rediscover the Church’s mission to bear witness to God’s love and the Gospel message.

We learn of divine mercy through Jesus’ passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension. In order to assist families to always be credible witnesses to mercy, professing it and living it daily, families are encouraged to come together to pray the rosary in church once a month prior to 9:30 a.m. Mass. Recitation begins at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 20. What a beautiful way for parents to lead their children (even the littlest ones!) to grow in love of our Lord through the eyes of Mary.

Christmas Tournament volunteers needed

The Athletic Association's biggest fundraiser is the Christmas Tournament held yearly from December 26th through December 30th. We host 32 teams from around the Dioceses and raise money to benefit all sports programs.

This year, we are looking for a committee to help coordinate the Christmas Tournament. We still need people to help with trophies, t-shirts, volunteers and to be present in the gym during this week. If interested, please contact Michele Cromer at mcromer@gtnlaw.com. Thank you!

Ski club

The Sacred Heart Ski Club is gearing up for its 2nd season!  Ski club is offered to children in grades 6-8.  Three ski trips will be planned to Hidden Valley Ski Resort.  The trips will take place on Friday nights in January and February. If you would like more details please contact Amy Volpe at jaisvolpe@gmail.com.   Additional details will be sent out in Option C and via the school envelope.

November food: Thanksgiving food items

In conjunction with Sacred Heart Parish, the school collects food to be contributed to the food bank run by East End Cooperative Ministry.

This month, the Christian Leadership Team (formerly known as Student Council) encourages all of us to contribute a Thanksgiving food item to share with our neighbors in need. Each grade is asked to bring in a different meal item.  The homeroom teachers will be notifying the children soon about the specific food item requested from their class.  At the Thanksgiving Liturgy, the children will fill baskets with our Thanksgiving bounty.

Thank you for your support.
