As we continue to celebrate the achievements of those who received Awards of Excellence in 2020, we thank Coast Women’s Imaging recognising the achievements of the DMU Dux 2019, Alexandra Keene.
We know Alex is grateful to have been given the opportunity for clinical training. A special thanks goes to her supervisor Fiona Singer and Dr Glenn McNally for providing her with this opportunity.
Thank you to all those who have helped ASUM recognise outstanding ultrasound achievements in 2020. We have had an amazing response, including videos and photos, to recognise those members who have gone above and beyond in ultrasound.
If you would like to recognise colleagues or peers for their expertise or for going the extra mile, you can place your nominations all year round through our website here.

NZ sonographer registration

ASUM is disappointed with the outcome from the recent MRTB consultation paper regarding registration of sonographers. ASUM has noted that of the 99 responses relating to the proposed changes, 80% of responses disagreed with the proposed changes to the registration options for this profession.
While we understand the limitations of the workforce are an ongoing concern, protection of the public must remain a priority, including the highest standards when using ultrasound to ensure quality safe practice and patient care. Based on the feedback from many of our New Zealand members there is considerable concern relating to these changes and we will continue to advocate for the profession.
The MRTB consultation outcome can be reviewed here.

While ASUM Outreach work has been restricted, ASUM recently supported a member in Fiji, Litia Kama Balenaivalu, providing complimentary access to online physics and instrumentation education.
While there were a few technical challenges, the ASUM team were on board to support this opportunity, providing access and support for continual learning to benefit healthcare professionals and patients alike.

Australian Government has decided to continue the capital sensitivity regional and remote area exemptions for a further 12 months. The exemptions will now cease on 01 May 2022.
The Government acknowledges the significant impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on health providers, including providers of diagnostic imaging. This extension will assist providers of diagnostic imaging services in regional and remote communities additional time to upgrade and replace imaging equipment to comply with the capital sensitivity provisions.
