U.S. RESTAURANT'S REOPENING GUIDEThe National Restaurant Association has created a reopening guide for the foodservice industry, with input from the Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency and Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The guide recommends certain measures to ensure safe environments for both staff and customers. Some of the tips include installing sneeze guards over buffet and salad bar areas, sanitising table condiments, ordering devices and shared menus and touchless hand sanitising stations. 2. BACK TO THE WEEKLY SHOPAccording to data analysed by Tesco, people have reverted to shopping how they did ten years ago, with one big weekly trip to the supermarket. While transaction numbers have all but halved in April, the content size and product quantity have doubled thus far. Tesco has reached one million online delivery slots per week for the first time ever and are expecting that amount to increase a further 20% over the coming days. Only 7% of all groceries were purchased online pre-COVID 19, highlighting an increase in online capacity of 103% in a few short weeks. 3. MORE QSR'S TO REOPEN THEIR DOORSSubway has reopened 16 stores in London for delivery or takeaway. McDonald's is carrying out operational tests this week to explore what reopening its restaurants in the UK and Ireland might involve. Such tests will include the likes of exploring social distancing measures for their crew, PPE options and opening in a limited capacity. TGI Fridays, Shake Shack and Nando’s are among other chains that are reopening for delivery and takeaway services. 4. STOCKING UP ON FROZEN FOODSIn the latest 12-week period, Kantar and the British Food Federation have reported that frozen foods have seen a 9.7% increase in spend year on year. Frozen prepared meals, fish and vegetables, such as peas and broccoli, are included in the largest share gains, followed by poultry and confectionary. Kantar notes that sales of these frozen food items have increased as millions of UK-based schoolchildren swap school lunches for lunchtime at home. Individual retailers are all experiencing a surge in frozen sales, with some reporting frozen pizza sales up 50%. 5. SCRUMPTIOUS SUMMER WITH WAITROSEBritish supermarket chain, Waitrose, is launching their ‘Scrumptious Summer’ food and drink range across its estate of over 300 stores. The new summer range contains over 145 products across multiple categories, including 70 new products and 17 refreshes of seasonal favourites. The ‘Scrumptious Summer’ range focuses on innovation, featuring modern revamps of classic recipes such as Bacon & Egg Bites and Ginger Beer Spatchcock Chicken. It is likely that Brits will be spending more time at home with family this summer, so this new range should appeal to those dining at home. 6. MCDONALD'S SPICE IT UPAvailable for a limited time only, McDonald’s Philippines has two new spicy offerings on their menu, the Spicy Chicken Burger and Spicy Shake Shake Fries, for those looking to add some heat to their meal. The Spicy Chicken Burger features a spiced fried chicken fillet topped with mayo sitting between two sesame seed buns. It is also available with the new Spicy Shake Shake Fries in select locations via drive-thru, McDelivery, GrabFood or FoodPanda. McDonald’s in the Philippines are also selling frozen ‘Cook-It-Yourself Packs' of their McNuggets, breaded chicken fillets and marinated chicken cuts for fans to order and cook at home. 7. A BURGER KING PARTYAs an ally to French families, Burger King France are offering 600 children a free birthday party once lockdown is lifted. For children whose birthday fell during restrictions, Burger King are keen to soften the blow by providing a party package complete with food, cake, presents, invites and decorations. Within 24 hours of launching the offer, over 2,000 parents uploaded a photo of their children’s birthday cakes to social media, tagging Burger King. All parties have since been claimed so Burger King have confirmed a further 100 party giveaways this week. Through this initiative, the brand hopes to cheer children up and show their dedication to families. 8. WHICH COUNTRIES BOUGHT WHATAs countries around the world came under lockdown due to the coronavirus prevention measures, households rallied to stock up on essentials, panic-buying product such as toilet roll, pasta and rice. While flour was found to be a common sold-out item across all regions, a study on 18 countries shows which specific items sold out first. To call out a few interesting finds, meat flew off the shelves across Japan, Armenia and the UAE. Meanwhile, France stocked up on canned fish, with England making sure to have their tea stocks looking healthy, while the U.S. made sure they had peanut butter a plenty! 9. PLANT-BASED MEALS FOR MORRISONS Loma Linda, an American brand famous for their plant-based tuna substitute, Tuno, is launching a range of meat-free meals into Morrisons. The various plant-based options include Spicy Pad Thai, Thai Green Curry, Tikka Masala and Chipotle Bowl.
