Our Lady of Grace Newsletter No Images? Click here Lord, we thank you for the blessings of this day and for this time together as family. Bless us as a family. TERM 1 WEEK 5 MARCH 6, 2019 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEDear Parents & Guardians Reconciliation is an opportunity for reflection on our own actions and make an effort to mend a broken relationship. During Lent ‘Reconciliation on a Bench’ will be available for our students in the playground on Friday 1 – 1.30pm. Father Mark and Father Richard will be available during this time if children wish to have the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Thank you to Father Mark and Father Richard for their support. One of the Prayers of the Faithful, at today’s Mass asked for us to be open to having this time of Lent change us. There are many opportunities for change and one may be around family prayer. A prayer you and your family may wish to say can be found at the top of the Newsletter. One example of humility and seeking to reconcile relationships is our Archbishop the Most Reverend Timothy Costelloe SDB. Archbishop Costelloe has in his own words “never shied away from acknowledging that the sexual abuse of children and young people by clergy, religious and other leaders in the Church has brought unimaginable suffering to victims and survivors, and to their families and friends.” (Pastoral Letter, 2 March 2019). Last weekend Archbishop write a Pastoral Letter in which he acknowledges the recent guilty verdict of Cardinal Pell. A link to this letter can be found here and I encourage you to read it. In the Pastoral Letter Archbishop Costelloe speaks to the parents of children who are students in our schools to reassure them that the Archdiocese has been active in ensuring that policies and procedures that govern our schools are stringent and stringently applied. Our Lady of Grace School has implemented and will continue to refine and embed the CEWA Child Safe Framework in our School. The Framework contains 9 elements covering all aspects of our school community a link to the Framework can be found here. Our recent technological upgrade to sign in and out procedures is an example of us ensuring a safe environment. All visitors to the school are required to follow these procedures. One thing we can do for victims and survivors of institutional abuse is to show them we believe them and support them. I invite all members of our community to demonstrate their support by joining me in tying a coloured ribbon on the fence at the top of the entrance ramp. These coloured ribbons are a sign and symbol of love and strength from our community. If your children ask you why are the ribbons on the fenced you could start a conversation about how our community is showing love and care to people who have been hurt and by talking about it we can stop it ever happening again. Newman College Parent Information Sessions 9 Ways to a Resilient Child (a FREE event for Early Childhood parents / guardians only) – Monday 25 March, 9.00am in the Marist Auditorium (216 Empire Avenue, Churchlands) Parents will learn the psychological secrets that build their child's sense of identity, strengths and growth mindset in order to perform better, be happier and build resilience. 9 Ways to a Resilient Child is based on Dr Justin Coulson's best-selling book, which shows parents how to help their children cope powerfully and positively with the challenges that life throws at them. This presentation is one of Justin's most popular presentations with powerful stories and illustrations that every parent can relate to. He explains the factors that help and hinder resilience, why common advice such as "toughen up Princess" just doesn't work, and how competition and praise may undermine resilience. Respectful Relationships; Love at Home (a FREE event for all parents / guardians) - Monday 25 March, 7.00pm in the Marist Auditorium (216 Empire Avenue, Churchlands) How to get along with your kids and help them get along with you (and their siblings). We all try to get along at home... but there are those uncomfortable niggles. There's the eye-rolling, the disrespect, the lack of motivation to help out, and the sibling warfare. If we're honest, most adults have been known to shout a bit too, and let's face it, we don't always listen that well to our kids. Conflict and friction at home cause more trouble than we need, and interfere with everyone's wellbeing. Wouldn't it be great if there were some simple, practical things we could do to help everyone get along better - starting right now? In this session, you'll learn the best 'relationship rules' for a happier family so home life really does feel loving... most of the time! The presentation will be followed by a Question and Answer session. Parents are to RSVP to me for both sessions: jo.dunn@cewa.edu.au These sessions are for parents only. We hope that parents will use the information they learn to better educate themselves. We acknowledge the original custodians of this land, the Nyungar people, and show our respect for their ancestors and traditions. Our Lady of Grace School |
