These conferences will be student-led, student-centered, and student- driven. They are beneficial in creating a unique, informative, and positive dialogue between parents and children about their education. It is also a great opportunity for students to showcase their accomplishments and reflect on their strengths, weaknesses and future goals. Several weeks before conferences students will be given time in class to prepare. Teachers will also spend time with students coaching them in preparation for the conference; collecting and deciding on artifacts to showcase, reflecting on their goals, strengths, and weakness and how to communicate that to their parents. In the upcoming weeks, more information will follow to schedule appointments. We look forward to seeing you all then! Here is a short video produced by a school in Chicago about Student Led Conferences. New Beginings in the 10-Year-Old ClassThis was an exciting week with new beginnings. We started new units in Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Science. We are borrowing snails from the 5 YOC so we can learn about what they need so we can create a wonderful environment for them. We are trying different environments for our plants as well to see what they need to thrive. We celebrated Naurys at school on Thursday and many will celebrate by traveling to a different environment over the vacation. Child Protection Curriculum in SecondaryIn the Child Protection Curriculum for secondary students, we have recently advanced to the second Focus Area - Rights and Responsibilities. We examined the rights and responsibilities students have at school before exploring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This week we watched and discussed two videos centered on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This is the most widely accepted document the UN has ever produced, with only one nation that hasn't signed on. We agreed that although international fundraisers by big stars and international courts are an acceptable band-aid solution, true change won't occur until nations enshrine these rights into their laws and/or constitutions so that each country can deal with abuses of these rights in their own courts rather than waiting for a UN representative to come around every few years and refer valid pending cases to an overbooked international court system. The remainder of this Focus Area covers abuses of rights and what you should do in a variety of scenarios, identity and relationships along with responsibilities within relationships, power imbalances in relationships, and the identification and development of trusted networks of people who can assist you in a variety of situations.
