AU Career PhD - Event Overview

January 2017

Mark you calendar.

Our events are now open for registration.

The spring events of 2017 are already scheduled and available for you to register for. Whether you are interested in learning more about your job opportunities, how to market yourself or maybe developing a new skill set, there is an event for you.

Event overview - Now with a new structure!

2016 offered a variety of familiar events as well as new ones. 2016 was also the year that we decided to organize our events into the following three categories: Market yourself, Skills and Opportunities.

Developing skills and knowledge within these three areas will help ensure your employability. By dividing our activities accordingly we hope to give you an impression of which part of your career skills you will develop by taking part in a certain activity.

To keep it easily manageable for you, these categories are similarly used on our website and Facebook page. Below you will find the events of spring 2017 organized accordingly.

Note! Therefore, the events just below are not listed in chronological order. However, for those of you preferring a chronological overview, you will find one at the end of this newsletter.

LinkedIn Seminar

Your LinkedIn profile is your professional face to the world! During this lecture Dennis Lam from LinkedIn will share his best tips and tricks to make your profile do the work for you. Main focus is on leveraging and expanding your network and perfecting your digital representation.

CV & Cover Letter Writing with a HR Perspective

You may know what kind of job you want after you have finished your PhD. Or maybe you are not quite there yet? Either way, there comes a time when you will have to find the best way to present yourself through your CV and cover letter. Maybe you have already sent out your first application, but did not get the response you were looking for?

If any of this sounds familiar, join this afternoon seminar where the topic will be the do's and don'ts of CV and cover letter writing for jobs outside academia. As a newer element of the CV & cover letter seminar, we will invite a HR profile from the industry to provide the recruiter's perspective and general insight into the recruitment process.

Date: 3rd May 2017

Time: 15:00-17:30

Place: Preben Hornungstuen, Studenterhusfonden, Fredrik Nielsens Vej 2-4, 8000 Aarhus C

Networking

Whether you like it or not, network is important for your career both for industry and for academia. But what is networking really? Is it about exchanging business cards at a conference or saying “nice talk” to the speaker after a seminar?

This networking seminar will cover what networking is all about – and what it is not about. We will also come around why a good network is important; how you build a network, and how you use your network. After this seminar, I hope you will have a more relaxed perception of networking and some clear ideas of how you can benefit from a strong network.

Date: 23rd February 2017

Time: 15:00-17:00

Place: Mogens Zielerstuen, Studenterhusfonden, Fredrik Nielsens Vej 2-4, 8000 Aarhus C

Developing Self-Awareness

Self-Awareness – developing Employability! Self-awareness is essential to achieve employability and it is the corner stone of career development. You need to know your professional and personal strengths in order to be able to convince others of your skills. Just as you need to know your skills, your values, your personality and your interests in order to find the career path or job that is right for you.

This workshop will focus primarily on skills and competence awareness: what are your strengths and your weaknesses and how do you convey your competences to others.

Date: 19th April 2017

Time: 15:00-17:30

Place: Preben Hornungstuen, Studenterhusfonden, Fredrik Nielsens Vej 2-4, 8000 Aarhus C

The Job Behind the Title

Today numerous job titles exist and it is not always easy to see through the titles and understand what the jobs behind actually involve.

We have invited three alumni working as respectively a Research Scientist, QA Manager and Product Manager to shed light on their current job.

The event sets out to illustrate and clarify which job taks these three titles actually imply. A range of considerations and topics will be covered, such as:

  • which qualifications are required to do the job?
  • which personal qualities do you make use of?
  • are you primarily working in front of a screen?
  • does it involve a lot of teamwork? is it interdisciplinary?
  • is the workday comprised of a lot of meetings?
