1. Early detection is key to controlling spread, as African Swine Fever marches on

As African Swine Fever (ASF) is expected to result in the deaths of a quarter of the pigs globally, improved surveillance, communication and collaboration are key to controlling the spread of African swine fever in Europe, according to a new risk assessment carried out by EFSA.

2. Salmonella outbreak hits several countries; EU officials release few details

More than 30 people are sick in Sweden and several other European countries from a rare strain of Salmonella. Officials will not say what other countries are involved or how many people are sick outside Sweden.

3. Sausage recall expanded second time amidst Salmonella outbreak

Officials have expanded a sausage recall for a second time in relation to an investigation into a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in Canada. A dozen people have been confirmed infected by the relatively rare strain of the pathogen.

6. Salmon recalled in 23 states because of danger of botulism poisoning

Following laboratory tests, a Maine company is recalling cold smoked salmon because of a risk of botulism poisoning. Mill Stream Corp. shipped the fish to 23 states and sold it online.

7. Simmons recalls over 2 million pounds of chicken

Simmons Prepared Foods Inc. of Gentry, Ark., is recalling 2,071,397 pounds of poultry products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Wednesday.

10. CDC reports death from Salmonella Dublin outbreak linked to ground beef

The Centers for Disease Control on Friday reported 10 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Dublin have been reported from six states of which eight were hospitalized and one person in California has died.
