President's Column

Dear Members and Friends,

This month gone past has seen a new Prime Minister and Trade Minister sworn in after a tumultuous fortnight in Australian politics. Fresh in these new roles, both made their way to Jakarta in recent days to announce that negotiations on the long-awaited Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement
(IA-CEPA) have been concluded.

This visit in itself is quite a remarkable achievement, but coming together with the announcement on IA-CEPA and that of a broader Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the future of our mutual relationship has surely taken several significant steps forward.

Prime Minister Hon Scott Morrison MP together with HE President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in formal and less formal situations at the Bogor Palace, one of 6 Presidential Palaces of Indonesia

I had the privilege of representing AIBC in Jakarta during the visit, and attended the major Indonesia Australia Business Forum, which was filled to beyond capacity. In attendance were many key business and government figures deeply involved in the relationship, and the overwhelming sentiment was strongly positive about the IA-CEPA and the prospects for better days ahead in our Trade and Investment relationship.

Indonesia’s Vice President, Jusuf Kalla, addressed the forum along with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and our Prime Minister thanked the Vice President for his strong personal efforts to drive IA-CEPA forward. The Prime Minister stressed that Indonesia’s success is Australia’s success, and that our countries must forge our mutual futures as a true partnership between friends. He also stressed that he and President Jokowi were firmly committed to IA-CEPA and to “get it inked”. To hearty applause, Prime Minister Morrison closed with the words “ayo kita maju bersama” or translated into Australian English “C’mon, let’s move forward together”.

Following the presentations, I was honoured to be personally introduced to Vice President Kalla by Prime Minister Morrison, acknowledging the important role that AIBC plays in the health and well-being of business links between our countries.

Our new Prime Minister must be congratulated on the success of this visit, which received much positive media coverage in Indonesia and Australia, and his warm and engaging style won over the hearts and minds of many. In our ongoing quest to deepen the trust and understanding between our countries, essential to creating an environment for ongoing successful and sustainable business, the Prime Minister scored high marks indeed.

There is much more to come on these exciting developments, and AIBC is delighted to have played a key role alongside our Indonesia-Australia Business Partnership Group (IA-BPG) colleagues at IABC, ACCI, Ai Group, KADIN and APINDO. The AIBC and the IA-BPG have a big job ahead in making sure the IA-CEPA delivers on its promise. Further comment can be found here in AIBC’s recent Media Release.

Our major biennial Conference on the Gold Coast in November shapes as a key platform for further detail on IA-CEPA to be “socialized” amongst the joint business community, and is not to be missed for the unique networking and other opportunities it presents. Further details can be found here and below.

We had a broad cross section of members and supporters in a 50 strong audience who engaged enthusiastically with the panelists and had an excellent opportunity to network over lunch and after the event.

Documentary about Australia's forgotten role in Indonesia's struggle for Independance - IN THE NAME OF THE PEOPLE

The relationship between Australia and Indonesia, two near and very significant neighbours, has often been fraught. During the Cold War Australia held fears about Soekarno’s Communist affiliations, followed by the Australia’s military support for Malaysia during Confrontasi in the early 60’s. Then there was Timor, and the execution of Australian drug traffickers, people smuggling, territorial breaches of Indonesian waters by the Australian Navy, spying revelations and the cruel treatment of live cattle imported from Australia.

But despite the political bluster that has at times come from Canberra or Jakarta, the two neighbours always find a way to manage each other. After all, it’s a relationship involving millions of dollars of trade and tourism, co-operation on counter-terrorism and people smuggling, and strong educational and cultural links –thousands of Indonesian students study in Australia annually. And then there’s Bali, the surfing gateway for many young Australians to Indonesia.  For further information, please click here.

Australia, Indonesia agree on stronger ties in grains sector

Singapore - Australia and Indonesia concluded negotiations for the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement or IA-CEPA on Friday, which will allow Australian farmers to export 500,000 mt/year of tariff-free feed grains to Indonesia.

Under the new agreement, Australia will gain access to the Indonesian feed grain market, with the ability to export duty-free feed barley, feed wheat and sorghum. Currently, Australia's grain trade to Indonesia is solely wheat for milling purposes.  To continue reading, click here.

Indonesia-Australia trade agreement to benefit both nation’s resources sectors

The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, which was finalised on 1 September, is anticipated to benefit both the Australian and Indonesian resources sectors.

According to the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), the agreement consists of a number of important provisions to encourage bilateral trade and investment partnerships in mining and mining services.

These measures are hoped to create more scope for Australia’s world-leading mining services firms to partner with Indonesian businesses in developing that nation’s extensive minerals and energy resources.  To continue reading, click here.

Australia's new Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Indonesian President Joko Widodo welcomed on Friday (Aug 31) the conclusion of all the main points of an economic partnership deal six years in the making.

New Business Licensing System

In his latest article, Bill Sullivan of Christian Teo & Partners, looks at the new Business Licensing System.

"BKPM took the investment community by surprise when it announced, in late June and with no prior warning, that it was immediately suspending the processing of all outstanding investment and licensing applications as part of the introduction of a new business licensing system and the “temporary” transfer of most license issuing authority from BKPM to the Coordinating Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Having regard to the economic importance of Indonesia’s energy, infrastructure and mining sectors, there should be particular concern about how investors in these sectors may be impacted by the new business licensing system.”
