Professional & Leadership Development Opportunity

How do leaders balance risk, innovation & growth?

At BSB's 2017 Thought Leadership Breakfast, Moderator, ABC Journalist and Radio Presenter, Rebecca Levingston will challenge the panel and audience to explore this topic and answer questions:
-  Does the size of an organisation make it more difficult to change course/innovate?
-  Are you hindered by a business/strategic plan?
-  How do you take your staff and customers along with you?
-  How does a business that is just surviving turn into a business that is thriving?

This informative, entertaining and, most importantly, thought-provoking discussion is not to be missed!

Time:   7.00am - 9.15am
Date:   Tuesday, 5 September 2017
Venue: Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre

Please note this event is also open to Non BSB Members - please feel free to extend an invitation to your network.

Emporium Hotel Southpoint - first hotel in Australia to achieve EarthCheck Design Certification

Before it has opened, the new flagship Emporium Hotel Southpoint is drawing an acclaimed line in the sand, having just received EarthCheck Design Certification, the first project in the country to achieve such status.

Achieving EarthCheck Design Certification places the new hotel in a unique worldwide group of sustainable buildings that are certified to the internationally recognised EarthCheck Building Planning and Design Standard, with the exclusive EarthCheckTM science inside.

Certification places the Emporium Hotel as a leader in the industry, creating significant efficiency-driven competitive advantages. The EarthCheck Design Certification also demonstrates compliance to best practice planning, design and construction practices in elements such as energy, water, transport, material selection, ecology and social, economic and cultural well-being.

Emporium Hotel Southpoint will open in mid 2018.

Wins for Australian Catering Services

Australian Catering Services’ (ACS) rising star Connor Johnson-James won Apprentice of the Year Award at the QLD/ NT Restaurant and Catering awards.

The Connection

Cleanaway

Name and position?
Neil Perry, General Manager Qld – Solid Waste Services for Cleanaway

Tell us about your business/organisation?
Cleanaway is an ASX listed public company and a market leader in the provision of waste management, industrial and environmental services.

What is your role at your organisation?
General Manager of our Qld Solid Waste Services team providing solid waste collection, post collection and recycling services to our customers across Qld from Port Douglas to Tweed Heads.

What are your key skills and responsibilities?
Leadership of our team of industry professionals providing services to meet customer’s waste management and recycling need. My key focus is on market development with our customers, development of our people and expanding Cleanaway’s solid waste assets and services across Qld.

How many people work at your business?
Cleanaway has over 4,000 employees in Australia with 500 employees and contractors in our Qld Solid Waste business.

What is your favourite place in the precinct?
Southbank Parklands and Beach precinct - a fantastic place to visit, to stroll, to dine and to bring domestic and international visitors – a Brisbane jewel.

What do you want BSB members to know about you or your business?
Cleanaway’s mission is “to make a sustainable future possible” and for BSB members we encourage all to recycle their waste and talk to the team at Cleanaway on 13 13 39 about maximising recycling and resource recovery.

What is something people wouldn’t know about your business?
We are largely an invisible service – whether it’s to households or to business our services largely are provided “behind the scenes” efficiently clearing  away waste and recyclables including Solid and Liquid Waste and providing a wide range of Industrial Cleaning services including spill clean ups. We also offset by recycling used oil the equivalent of 900,000 barrels of oil each year.

What has recently happened at your organisation?
We have recently been awarded in an Alliance contract with Brisbane City Council a 10 year contract commencing on 1 July 2018 to operate Council’s four Resource Recovery Centres at Nudgee, Ferny Grove, Chandler and Willawong along with the Council’s landfill at Rochedale and the haulage of waste and recyclables from the Centres to disposal locations. A very significant contract and we look forward to servicing Council’s needs and the people of Brisbane.

What have you learnt lately?
I continue to be amazed at the lack of understanding of recycling programs and recyclable items and the amount of waste generated which was highlighted in recent ABC “War on Waste” TV program.

What do you hope to achieve in your industry?
We want to achieve Our Mission “to make a sustainable future possible” by providing an ever increasing range of recycling and resource recovery solutions to our customers and Councils, the Business community and households across Qld.

What inspires you?
The dedication and commitment of our people providing services across Qld at all hours and in many instances 7 days a week impacted in the communities we operate with climatic events such as the recent Cyclone Debbie and its aftermath in Qld.

What are your words of wisdom?
“Make a Difference”, and also a term we use in Cleanaway a lot “Trust and Verify” which entails trusting our people to undertake their service delivery functions and responsibilities and then verifying by our systems and processes that we have meet our customer and governance obligations.
