Changes to MBS for DVT examinations
From 1 July 2019 a number of minor changes to the MBS item for DVT will come into effect. The changes are in response to recommendations of the MBS Review Taskforce to improve quality of care, encourage high value care and reflect current clinical practice.
Co-claiming of items (55244 and 55246 and NK equivalents, 55221 and 55222) for acute venous thrombosis and chronic venous disease for the same patient on the same day is not appropriate clinical practice and recommended claiming restrictions be introduced.
Further information including a Fact Sheet is available on the MBS Review Taskforce website

Infection Prevention Update
ASUM is proud to acknowledge one of their team, Dr Jocelyne Basseal, for her outstanding accomplishments in infection prevention in ultrasound. Jocelyne, who manages the journal AJUM, along with Research Grants and Standards of Practice has an academic and research background in Microbiology and is driving further research into infection prevention in ultrasound.
A recent study of ultrasound probe cover breakages post transvaginal ultrasound was presented by Jocelyne last week at the 9th International Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control (APSIC) Congress in Vietnam. Jocelyne received the 2018 Cardinal Health and ACIPC Educational Scholarship to partially support her to attend the International Congress and upon presenting the research data, received a Merit Award for Outstanding Oral Presentation at the APSIC 2019 Closing Ceremony.
Congratulations Jocelyne and the research team, Sue Westerway and Jon Hyett. ASUM is proud to promote research into patient health and safety in ultrasound. All new evidence-based research will assist with the next revision of the Guidelines.
Keep an eye out for more exciting research projects within the Emergency Dept, in the pipeline for 2019 / 2020.
