It's a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment---particularly in disadvantaged and low-income communities. California Climate Investments projects include affordable housing, renewable energy, public transportation, zero-emission vehicles, environmental restoration, more sustainable agriculture, recycling and much more. SUCCESS STORIES The Replace Your Ride program helps people trade in their older, high polluting vehicles for a more fuel-efficient option. Options include: a new or newer vehicle, a hybrid or electric vehicle, discounts on car-sharing or vanpooling, or a public transit pass. “The Replace Your Ride program is ingenious and helps so many people and environmental causes” – Marc Thomas King, Los Angeles, CA “I have my new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid now, thanks to the Replace Your Ride Program. Otherwise, I cannot afford this beautiful car. This car gives me almost 42 miles per gallon of gasoline. Compared with the 18 miles that Nissan Xterra gave me which is a huge difference and the car is pretty smooth. Thanks again for making my dream car come true”. – Marco Medina, Sylmar, CA Source: 2017 California Climate Investments Annual Report CALIFORNIA CLIMATE INVESTMENTS IN THE NEWS Strategic Growth Council The California Strategic Growth Council (SGC) approved $140 million in competitive grants to transform three cities through community-led development and infrastructure projects. The Council allocated $70 million to the City of Fresno, $35 million to the Watts neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles, and $35 million to the City of Ontario. These investments will fund 45 unique climate projects, reducing an estimated 117,412 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions—the equivalent of taking 25,142 cars off the road for one year. The projects will leverage over $280 million and touch the lives of close to 750,000 Californians. For the full story click here. Natural Resources Agency The California Natural Resources Agency announced $76 million in funding for green infrastructure projects through the state’s Urban Greening Program. Funded by Cap-and-Trade revenues, the grants support projects that aim to reduce greenhouse gases by sequestering carbon, decreasing energy consumption and reducing vehicle miles traveled. The projects also convert built environments into green spaces that improve air and water quality and provide opportunities for walking, biking and recreation. Urban Greening awarded 39 grants in 19 counties, 92% of funds benefiting disadvantaged communities. For the full story, click here. Department of Food and Agriculture The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has awarded $9.64 million in grant funding to 17 alternative manure management projects across the state. These projects will reduce greenhouse gas emissions on California dairy farms and livestock operations and provide additional benefits that will help meet the state's climate goals. AMMP grant recipients will provide an estimated $2.7 million in matching funds for the development of their projects. Full press release can be found here. Workshops are planned within the surround areas around the State and via webinar. More information at: www.fire.ca.gov/grants/grants California Natural Resources Agency The Urban Greening Grant Program, funded by California Climate Investments, funds projects that reduce GHG emissions by enhancing and expanding neighborhood parks; providing greening of public lands and structures; establishing green streets and alleyways; and developing nonmotorized urban trails that provide safe routes for travel. The agency evaluated 143 applications and recommended funding for 39 projects. Ninety two percent of the funding was awarded to projects in disadvantaged communities as defined by SB 535 of 2012. Community Air Protection Program: Technical Summits The California Air Resources Board (CARB) invites you to participate in technical summits on the implementation of the Community Air Protection Program (Program). The Program was established as directed in Assembly Bill (AB) 617 (C.Garcia, Chapter 136, Statutes of 2017) and provides a new community-focused action framework to reduce exposure in disadvantaged communities most impacted by air pollution. The bill recognizes that while California has seen tremendous improvement in air quality, some communities still suffer greater impacts than others. Over the next several years, CARB and air districts will be working closely with community groups, community members, environmental organizations, and regulated industry to reduce harmful air emissions and create a new framework for community protection. The summits will be held at the locations and dates shown below. Each location will follow the same format and present the same material.
