Immediate Penile Implant Surgery a Viable Option for Treating Priapism

For men with priapism, having immediate penile implant surgery might have fewer complications than delayed surgery, scientists suggest in a recent Sexual Medicine Reviews article.

The authors discuss immediate surgery in the context of three different types of priapism: ischemic, recurrent, and non-ischemic.

Immediate prosthesis implantation is "technically easier," because there is less fibrosis, they explained, adding that such procedures are still better left in the hands of experienced surgeons. Both malleable and inflatable prostheses can be considered.

More details on the review are available here.

New Research: CCH, Vacuum Therapy, and Peyronie's Disease

Please note that a new research summary has been posted to the ISSM website.

"Treatment of Peyronie's Disease With Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum and Vacuum Therapy: A Randomized, Open-Label Pilot Study" by David J. Ralph, FRCS, et al. was published online in September in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The pilot study explored the effects of vacuum-pump therapy, with and without penile modeling, in men receiving injections of collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) for treatment of Peyronie's disease.
