The European Society of Cardiology has published new guidelines covering diabetes, people at high risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Developed in collaboration with the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), they were published online on Saturday, August 31, by the European Heart Journal. Healthcare professionals are being urged to help people with type 2 diabetes to meet their three treatment targets as it could save the NHS more than £727 million across a decade. The study, supported from the Nuffield Department of Population Health at the University of Oxford and Diabetes UK, showed that those who met their treatment targets lowered their risk of developing diabetes-related complications by £1,037 per person. An “immersive digital environment” is being rolled out across Portsmouth in a bid to increase diabetes care in hospital. Healthcare professionals are being given the opportunity to learn more about diabetes-related complications by using a virtual reality training system. Spaces are now available to attend the first-ever Low Carb Program webinar to help healthcare professionals better understand the principles of the Low Carb Program and how it can be used to support sustainable type 2 diabetes remission. A standardised framework for the local commissioning of dental services for people with diabetes has been published by NHS England and NHS Improvement. This document, Commissioning Standard: Dental Care for People with Diabetes, has been developed in recognition of the link between gum disease and diabetes. A national campaign to raise awareness of the Low Carb Program has reached more than eight million people.
