Major initiative to combat homelessness has launched in FrankstonFrankston Zero – an initiative to combat homelessness and assist rough sleepers was launched last week as part of National Homelessness Week (1-7 August 2021). Established by the Frankston City Strategic Housing and Homelessness Alliance, Frankston Zero is a collaboration of 14 agencies and the culmination of two years of intensive planning to address the rising rates of rough sleeping homelessness in the municipality. With a 388 per cent increase in rough sleeping homelessness since 2016, the State Government has recognised Frankston as one of nine rough sleeper hotspots in Victoria. ‘Green light’ for revitalisation of a Frankston City Centre gatewayWorks are underway on a significant greening initiative at a key gateway to the Frankston City Centre. Frankston City Council’s City Centre Greening Program will see significant landscape improvements to the north and south sides of the Fletcher Rd overpass. While improving the experience of the area, tree planting will contribute to Council’s commitment to increasing its urban forest tree canopy and the Greening our Future Strategy. Revitalising the gateway to our city, is in line with a rolling pipeline of projects that reflect our vision to improve amenities, perceptions of Frankston and community safety. Frankston City builds on vibrant arts collectionFrankston City Council is building on its vibrant arts and culture, delivering new sculptures as part of its public arts offering. Mayor, Kris Bolam, said Frankston City was well known as a thriving arts hub with a strong commitment to connecting to the community through art. “Council has worked hard to build our City’s impressive collection of public art, which features interactive murals, dynamic sculptures, public performances and the popular yearly street art festival, Big Picture Fest, with an investment of $140K─$180K annually. Over the next 12 months, residents and visitors will see at least five new sculptures installed across our city and its suburbs, including a new gateway sculpture. South East B.I.G Build Expo and Workshop - now onlineImportant Update: The Wednesday 11 August workshop (3.30-5.30pm) will now be hosted online. The Expo on Thursday 12 August (10am-2.30pm) is going ahead live on the Invest Frankston Facebook page. The South East B.I.G Build will showcase over $1 billion worth of the latest exciting new developments coming to our incredible region, and provide an opportunity for local businesses to hear from developers about ways they can get involved. Kananook Creek Gardens Vision Plan to enhance precious environmentFrankston City Council has enhanced its commitment to our precious environment with the adoption of the 2021 Kananook Creek Gardens Vision Plan. Councillors voted unanimously at a recent Council Meeting to adopt the Plan, which sets out five key principles and corresponding actions focused on preserving the local ecology and honouring cultural heritage. South Ward Cr Claire Harvey said: “Children are our future – the Plan is a holistic and robust roadmap for enabling best outcomes for families with children up to six years in the municipality, demonstrating a whole-of-Council commitment to the early years in Frankston City.” National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child's Day at Mahogany Rise Child CareOn 4 August, the educators and children at Mahogany Rise Child and Family Centre celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, with this year's theme 'Proud in Culture, Strong in Spirit.' The day started with an Acknowledgement of Country and continued with activities on Australian animals to our natural environment, clay, seed planting, red sand play and natural material bracelet making. The children were very excited to see a didgeridoo and boomerang and to dance to Indigenous music . The Centre enjoyed a delicious bush tucker lunch from the Cooee Café and the children made damper with desert raisin blend and lemon myrtle and wattle seed cookies for afternoon tea.
