Alabama Families of Prisoners Conference

Worried about the safety of an incarcerated family member? What should you expect when your family member is released? Find your answers at the Alabama Families of Prisoners Conference and Kids Conference on August 1 and 2 at McElwain Baptist Church in Birmingham. This third annual conference will feature keynote speakers Ron and Catherine Tijerina, directors of The Ridge Project, along with panel discussions, workshops and exhibits. Prison Commissioner Kim Thomas, Extended Family Director Laure Clemons and Encourager Ministries Director Mary Kay Beard are just a few of the guest speakers who will be attending (above).

A special Kids Conference for ages 6-15 will teach kids how to deal with the stigma associated with having an incarcerated family member. Using the Extended Family curriculum, art, music and dance will drive this message home. Visit www.alabamafpc.org or call 800-656-7197 to register. Financial aid is available.

Mentor Training To Take Place in August

Approximately 75 women return to the Dothan community from incarceration each month. Research has proven that strong mentoring programs can positively affect the outcomes for these women. Women with mentors are more likely to find and keep a job and less likely to recidivate. Mentors who listen nonjudgementally help participants stay focused on their goals of employment and family reunification.

Healthy You will be holding a Mentor Training in Dothan on August 5, 7, 12, and 14 from 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. This training will help set goals and explain the specific needs of formerly incarcerated women. Mentors will be expected to complete this training and commit to mentoring for at least one year with a minimum of four hours per month spent with participants. To register, call 334-671-7774.

WIRED Helps at the Genesis II House

Special thanks to WIRED Ministries for their help at the Genesis II Transitional House. This dedicated group of young volunteers painted the house inside and out and worked in the yard for one week in June. The ladies who will make Genesis II their home will certainly benefit from WIRED's efforts!

A Week with Girls Inc.

At-Risk Coordinator Kris Doss, Public Relations Coordinator Laura Stakelum and two new UpTeens Jordan Dickenson and McKenzie Dalton recently spent a week with the young ladies at Girls Inc. Students learned what to do if they are bullied or witness bullying. Through stories, sharing and crafts, participants learned that everyone has value.

Beat Back-To-School Stress

Make the grade. Win the game. Get a date. Dress the part. Stress can make it difficult for students to focus. Create a calm in the back-to-school storm by making your home a stress free zone. Resolve differences with respect, set goals and celebrate strengths so your young scholar can flourish. For more info on how healthy relationships in the home can help students thrive, visit Healthy You Inc. at www.jtfstraighttalk.com.
