Battles are not won by generals who fight “by the book,” and success in the business world depends on the ability to identify and implement new strategies. That means today’s leaders need to know how to persuade people to do unfamiliar things and do so quickly.

Through his focus on such great military strategists and business leaders as Alexander the Great and the brains behind Google, Eric Beaudan, author of the renowned book Creative Execution, offers an in-depth look at the audacious acts that led to stunning victories – whether they’re on the battlefield or in the world of commerce.

Alberta is in a tough financial spot. Our oil is selling at a deep discount compared to the world price. A lack of pipeline capacity and access to a wider range of customers, along with a glut of supply in the North American marketplace, has resulted in a price differential for Western Canadian oil that is sitting around $30 per barrel less than what it would fetch on the world market.

This price differential is contributing to a provincial revenue shortfall, leading to speculation as to what measures government will take to deal with this situation, including adding healthcare premiums, taking on more debt and maybe even introducing a provincial sales tax.

Fresh from delivering the 2013 provincial budget, Alberta’s Finance Minister Doug Horner will separate fact from fiction by offering extended views on the government’s budget position in a speech to the Calgary business community.

Learn how the government’s belt-tightening measures will impact your business.

Chamber calls for creation of Provincial Budget Office to combat ongoing deficits

As we draw closer to March 7, Alberta’s 2013 budget seems to be on everyone’s mind. The fluctuation in the surplus and deficits calculated over the past few years has caused government to think long and hard about both its revenues and its spending.

To help fix the province’s ongoing deficit problem, the Calgary Chamber believes that Alberta needs a Provincial Budget Office to act as a fiscal watch dog.

Learn how this budget office would bring transparency and accountability into the budgeting process.
