TERM 1 WEEK 8 MARCH 27, 2019 PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEDear Parents/Guardians It has been a delight to hear many excited children and parents walk through the school talking about the 3 Way Conference they just experienced. I have heard many words of encouragement and acknowledgement of work to date. It has been clear that both students and teachers have put much effort into the preparation for this important conversation. My thanks to all those parents who have taken the time to be a part of their child’s learning. I admire and thank all our teachers for their professionalism and energy levels at this time of the term. We have been privileged as a school to have been invited to participate in a professional learning opportunity over the next two years. A team of Teachers and members of the Leadership Team will be working with Dr Lyn Sharratt (an international educator and author) on a school improvement framework with a focus on Literacy. The framework is applicable across all learning areas as it is centred around good teaching and learning. We start our journey next week and the team attending will then lead the improvement process across our school. This work will build on the strong teaching foundation at OLG and current programs such as Reading Recovery and other support programs will continue to be a part of this. I look forward to sharing our learning with you. Some of our Learning Teams recently formed by teachers will include opportunities for parents to participate. I am very keen to have the contribution of parents in the discernment and decision making in areas that affect our students. The teams that require parent contributors include; · Information Technology (IT) · Health and Wellbeing · Evangelization Team. If you feel you have the skillset and ability to contribute to any of these teams please drop into reception for further information or email Vicki.Ryan@cewa.edu.au. The voice of our children is also important in these teams and there are many opportunities for our students to contribute to our school and the decision that impact them. Students will also be a part of the IT and Wellbeing teams. One example of how the “voice of the child’ is being sought is by our Year 6 Wellbeing Ministry undertaking a survey of all students to find out their experience of our playground and school. The questions will be based on finding out where children feel ‘good and happy’ around our school and the areas that they don’t. We will collate the data and then start to work toward improving the look, the feel and the learning that happens in our school environment. One of the changes you may have noticed is the three new flag poles outside Reception. The students in Year 6 have been learning all about flag protocols with some assistance from the North Beach RSL, a great community effort. We welcomed back Mrs Alexander this week to Year 4. Mrs Alexander left as Miss Ottolini and we have been privileged to have shared in the joy of her marriage to Arran. You can see from the photo how lovely their day was. Contact details for Mrs Alexander remain the same. Gabrielle M Doyle Library Roster Congratulations to the students who received Merit Awards at last week's assembly. Cake Stall: Thank you to the parents who supported the cake stall held last week. A total o $251 was raised for the Year 5 classes. PARENT CAMPS Our Lady of Grace School does not sponsor, organise or have any organisational responsibility for parent camps. Under no circumstance is a parent camp to be booked using the school name. I would ask that if there are camps currently booked under the school name they are changed immediately. I led a discussion at the P&F on Monday about the impact of the camps and asked for feedback. The general consensus is that the camps are a great way for families to get to know each other and to build our Catholic community. If this is the case then consideration needs to be given to the financial affordability of camps and the impact on the education program at school. RHYME TIME! We will be having an introduction session on Friday the 29th March after the school assembly. 9:15ish. We will recommence next Term on the Friday of week two then follow on the even numbered weeks/fortnightly. Bring your child, bring your friends. You don't need to be part of Our Lady of Grace School to enjoy connecting to your child through rhyme, story and songs. It's FREE Hope to see you there. Teresa Wandek Stations of the Cross will be held in the school grounds on our last day of Term, Thursday 11 April. This is a special time for our school to gather and walk the story of Easter together. Our Year 6 students will create the stations in several areas of the school grounds and finish inside the OLG Church. All parents, grandparents and families are invited to join us on this day. Parishioners are also very welcome to walk the Stations of the Cross with us. Further times and details will be published on Flexibuzz. As part of Environmental Week the Environmental Ministry encouraged children to walk, ride or scoot to school this week. Children have been greeted at the gates each morning by a Ministry member and are given a sticker if they participated that morning. We have noticed a great increase in bikes in the bike rack. Environmental Success! All of the Environmental ministry would like to thank all students and parents who have put effort into walking or riding to school. We hope that everyone will walk or ride to school more often. Your participation in environmental week was greatly beneficial to OLG, and we hope you enjoyed it.
