Can a Mediterranean Diet Improve Sexual Function in Diabetic Patients?

People with type 2 diabetes who follow a Mediterranean diet may see improvements in sexual function, according to new research.

The study, published in June in Diabetes Care, involved 215 patients with type 2 diabetes. They were randomly assigned to follow either a Mediterranean diet or a low-fat diet.

The Mediterranean diet includes lots of fruits and vegetables, along with legumes, whole grains, seeds, beans, nuts, fish, and olive oil. Butter, red meat, and foods high in sugar are typically avoided.

Using the International Index of Erectile Function and the Female Sexual Function Index, the researchers assessed the participants' sexual function at baseline, before randomization, and every six months thereafter. The average follow up time was about eight years.

During that period, lower incidence of erectile dysfunction and female sexual dysfunction was found among those who followed the Mediterranean diet. Sexual problems were also less likely to worsen in this group.

The authors suggested that the Mediterranean diet might improve "inflammatory milieu and cardiovascular risk" in diabetic patients, which could, in turn, improve sexual function.
