China’s Energy Transition: Effects on Global Climate and Sustainable Development

This MSSI public lecture, presented by Prof Ross Garnaut AO, will explore the new model of economic growth in China and the way it is affecting the chances of avoiding human-induced climate change, including through expanding options for low-cost low-carbon development in other countries.

MUPSS Panel Discussion: Designing the Sustainable City

Panellists include Professor Chetan Vaidiya, Director of the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi; David Waldren, National Executive Design Manager at Grocon; and a representative from the City of Melbourne.

As cities are the largest contributor of global greenhouse gas emissions, significant action must be taken to increase the sustainability of existing and future urban environments. Redesigning our cities to be more energy efficient will require collaborative and creative responses from a variety of stakeholders with the building and construction industry likely to have a significant role in this transition.

What is the role of the of building and construction industry in moving towards sustainable city design? How can a variety of disciplines work together to reduce the carbon emissions in urban settlements across the globe?

Mini grants for 3D printing

Applications due: 12.00pm Monday 1 September

Early career researchers, including postgraduate and doctoral students and/or any researcher who has been awarded a PhD within the past five years are invited to apply for the ‘Research Product Realisation Working Group’ (#RPRWG) 3D printing mini research grants.

A total of 6 grants of AUD $5,000 each are available to support impact factor-based research (for example, publications, exhibitions etc.) in the use of 3D printing alongside its applications across various research disciplines.

The main deliverable of the mini grant will be an impact factor based publication of research in an appropriate academic journal or exhibition.

In his public lecture, University of Queensland Professor Jose Torero, one of the world's foremost experts on fire in building, will be articulating the challenges of meeting the true spirit of safety regulations, particularly within innovative construction environments. To design and building safely for fire it is not sufficient to have laws in place; it is essential to understand how buildings burn.

Overcoming Procrastination

Putting tasks off until the last possible moment can be a problem in your studies and personal life. This workshop assists you to understand why you procrastinate and explores ways to stay on track and get things done.

Manage Your Mood

Are your feelings getting in the way of your studies? What we say to ourselves can have a major influence on our reactions to events and consequently our mood. Learn a simple but effective way to better understand "self talk" and improve your mood.

Return of Manifesto: 21st Century Architecture

Students who completed the subject ABPL90117 Twenty-first Century Architecture in 2013 and 2012 can pick up their student manifesto projects from Room 625, 757 Swanston Street, on Fridays from 1.00pm - 3.00 pm.

Projects must be picked up before Wednesday 1 October, 2014.

The Introduction & Conclusion

The introduction of a thesis is the place to set out
your research question, background, contexts
and methods. It is the place to set up your
argument clearly, and in a way that helps you to
maintain flow throughout the thesis. The
conclusion is the place to state your answers to
the research question and to place your answers
in context. We will look at techniques to create
excellent introductions and conclusions.

Have you almost finished your thesis? Do you need a little motivation and guidance on how to give it the final touches so you tell your research story as effectively as possible? In this workshop we will discuss strategies to edit and revise your work. You will leave with an understanding about how to make good work even better!
