October 2020 Newsletter

Hi ,

Whether you’re a freshman entering your first term at your new school, in a discussion section for a new class, or taking your first upper-division course, many students entering a new or unfamiliar space will experience doubt and question their place on campus, which is also known as Imposter Syndrome.

Imposter Syndrome can impact first generation students and students of color especially hard and can be a significant barrier to engaging in courses and on campus. Oakland Promise is here to support you on your educational journey and finding your place on your campus. Check out our October Resource Guide on Navigating Imposter Syndrome for strategies to address Imposter Syndrome.

Holidays and Observances

Indigenous Peoples Day

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a holiday celebrated on the second Monday of October in the United States, in lieu of Columbus Day. Indigenous Peoples’ Day, aims to celebrate and honor the past, present, and futures of Native peoples throughout the United States and acknowledges the legacy of colonialism, which has devastated Indigenous communities historically and continues to negatively impact them today. Indigenous Peoples’ Day moves beyond the narrative of oppression and honors the histories, cultures, contributions, and resilience of contemporary Native peoples.*

Learn more about Indigenous People's Day from IllumiNative's Indigenous Peoples' Day toolkit below.
